The review

The fifth volume in the series presents outtakes from 1993 through 2012, the first six discs continue the Voodoo Lounge saga offering more finished tracks, alternates and remixes of songs coming from the sessions for that album. On Disc One stands out Thru And Thru 5 which is an 8.30 minutes long version. Disc Two presents some of Keith Richards favorite songs from Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davies, Cole Porter, The Marcels, Buddy Holly, The Carter Family, The Everly Brothers, Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan and Rambling Jack Elliot while recording some overdub for New Faces. Funny anecdote from Keith who says Cocaine was the first song he learned while at Art School, at the time he had no idea about what cocaine was. More Voodoo Lounge alternates on Discs Three and Four (the latter mostly instrumental versions ) while Disc Five presents a jam session that happened during the overdub session for You Got It Made that features Jagger at the piano singing a Bob Dylan classic and then two takes of Marvin Gaye Trouble Man, followed by Keith Richards playing piano as well on a rendition of a Ricky Nelson song (Lonesome Town) and 4 takes of Hoagy Carmichael s Nearness Of You that will be released 10 years later on Live Licks; it is interesting that when Ron Wood joins him at the end he plays a national steel guitar. Disc Six presents various mixes of some specific songs from Voodoo Lounge from the sessions at Don Was private studio in January 94. Disc Seven presents the studio tracks from Stripped recorded in Tokyo and Lisbon plus 2 (electric) versions of Like A Rolling Stones, including Honest I Do released in 1998 as part f the soundtrack of Hope Floats film, all official stuff which is pointless to include here. Unfortunately there are not real outtakes/alternates from the Bridges to Babylon album in circulation, so here are the next 4 discs full of remixes (authorized or not) from that album, particularly funny is Out Of Control the first take on Disc Nine where the song start is mixed with Temptation s classic Papa Was A Rolling Stone with which shares the bass lines. Discs Ten and Eleven feature real authorized remixes including Disc Ten, Tracks 8,10,11,14 and Disc Eleven, Track 4which are just the call out hooks lasting few seconds each. Disc Twelve presents tracks from the Forty Licks sessions that have surfaced recently as well as known bits taken from the DVD with Cried Out which is the embryonic version of Laugh I Nearly Died s Just Because the early version of Keith Richards Trouble. You Better Leave That Man Alone is a nice blues taken from the Four Flicks DVD (Tip of the Tongue) unfortunately marred by band members talking over music. Disc Thirteen features many other remixes and some non album versions of tracks from A Bigger Bang, other alternates from this album are featured on Disc Fourteen and some more Rain Fall Down remixes on Disc Fifteen, which also presents some of the tracks that were re-mixed during 2007 and 2008, some are really bad like the I m Free ones, other kind of close to the original like Under The Boardwalk. The 2 songs from Grrrr come after that in different extended mixes(amazingly at the end of Doom and Gloom# 3 starts for dew seconds Tumbling Dice!), then in the Obscurities section we have 2 versions of Gimme Shelter from October 69 with sudden end, the first one is instrumental. Disc Sixteen is quite interesting sporting tracks that have surfaced meanwhile like Try Me from the Chess Str. 1965 session (the instrumental version is believed to be a fake, as well as the stereo version, the original being in mono) and more outtakes, the instr. Version of Child Of The Moon and the version of Sympathy For The Devil with no overdubs and 2 karaoke versions of Honky Tonk Women (also fakes). The disc ends with more Undercover sessions tracks (the 2 takes of Gotta Know seem to be one take split in 2) and finally the 3 Tattoo You alternates with Sonny Rollins on sax. Packaging is as good as on all other WLR release, this time though there is more inaccurate information on the booklet.
