REVIEW: |
This new
release presents a matrix of two different sources for the Stones Los Angeles
second show from November 8th 1969; according to what is written in
the accompanying lines Falo suggested to do this one. First both sources were equalised
by Cpt. Acid, then Falo did the matrix of them and in the end a final equalization
with some volume correction was done.
The
recording captures this legendary concert with a matrix that combines L.A.69
(DAC 120) disc and watchit different audience source which presented this
second Los Angeles Forum show in a spectacular crystal clear recording that
rivalled Oakland
s second show despite being in mono as well. This concert was first released on
vinyl in April 93 as L.A. 69 (OBR 305 018) together with a 7” single in 150 copies on blue
vinyl but without Jumping Jack Flash and with a cut in Midnight Rambler, then
re-released it as Special Collector s Series vol.18; then in 1992 Lost Satanic
Tour (Picturesque 002) copied the OBR release and in November 93 a picture disc called Welcome
to L.A. (without the single) later reissued as number 34 of Works. On compact the
first complete recording came out in November 95 as part of Cocaine on a
Dentist Chair (VGP 068), Born in a Crossfire Hurricane (Sonic Zoom 1002) that
had a clearer but distant recording, then in August 94 Street Hassle in L.A. (Stonehenge
001) was released in Europe, taken from a tape that came out in 92. In December 2006 came
out One Late Night at the Forum (Sister Morphine 054) but then in 2010 a cdr called Inglewood
Forum, LA 69 2nd show which presented the music found on Born in a
Crossfire Hurricane supplemented by 3 tracks from Cocaine On A Dentist Chair;
later on we got Western Affair Vol.1 (DAC 124), Dub And Douglas Present (Eat A
Peach 115) also on vinyl (Casino Rec.) and Let It Bleep (Palladium). This
recording can also be found on In Concert 1969 box (WLR 2160).
This
concert is a very good one with Keith Richards on fire but the whole band s performance
can be easily appreciated and that includes some soaring solos by Mick Taylor.
This version
by combining two different sources enhances listening pleasure offering another
gem among the many, unfortunately unreleased ones, that did constitute that
fabulous 69 tour, the ending result is a quasi stereo output that although
artificially achieved is nonetheless remarkable and by far the best sounding
ever. Packaging is great and offers on front cover back side the explanation
for this weird title (ice in California?)
since the Forum was used the afternoon before for an ice hockey game and the
Stones concert delayed while workers had to cover up the ice beginning at 5 am,
an excerpt taken from Stanley Booth book The True Adventures of the Rolling
Stones.
