REVIEW: |
These days
collectors are experimenting dubious releases from the major silver labels,
mostly reproposing well known stuff in so called different shape, this is somehow
an answer to that with a mocking label number too, but we can all it a fan-to-fan
project that highlights a labour of love and a though search in order to
produce the best sounding tracks from the Stones Philadelphia 72 three shows;
this release started as a fun project to compare all known Philadelphia 72
soundboard tracks with the new "Multiband" Remasters, Imo they are
made with AI, not from multitracks. All Stones fans know that that there are a
lot of Philadelphia boots and most likely another version could be not needed.
Regardless of that, the aim was to put together the original versions as
complete as possible. By the way, not all Philadelphia bootlegs are actually
from Philadelphia. There was some problem with the sources as published in the
notes, especially concerning the so called IMP 006 release, no such thing
exists, since that number is Keith Richards Main Offender Tour 92 Cologne, so
most likely the maker referred to Philadelphia Special (TSP 006); that is the
problem arising when the bootleg is mentioned only with its label number and no
name.
This
compilation is made from the following sources:
More
Philadelphia Special [No Label 2] an unlabelled edition
Plug In
Flush Out [VGP 259 V1] Disc One, tracks 15,16 And Disc Two, Tracks 1,3,8 and 9 have
been reworked, that is denoised softly.
Philadelphia
Special [TSP 006] partly in excellent quality, partly with too much noise
reduction with tools that produce metallic sounds, like "Cool Edit"
or "Adobe Audition". Specially Midnight Rambler, Love In Vain and
Sweet Virginia seemed to have been denoised with these tools from the late 90s.
Nothing better was available then.
Another
great compilation is Captain Acid's "Philadelphia Specialities Plus"
(APCD 057) which contains a complete show made from the three Philadelphia
concerts plus rarely played 72 songs. Midnight Rambler is, otherwise as noted,
from Ft. Worth, 2nd show.
Talkin'
'bout Midnight Rambler a source in very good quality could not be located. They
all have been de-hissed to death or come from different sources. This is the
track with the lowest sound quality, so the version from –plug In Flush Out (VGP
259) was the one that sounded best with a slight denoising. This is indeed a
nice release that justifies its name proposing a very natural sounding
selection from the 3 Philadelphia concerts in 1972, the best thing so far, waiting
for an official release, if there ever will be one.
