Here is the
fourth volume of DAC’s collection of the Art Collins Tapes which is dedicated
to the Some Girls sessions from late 1977.
Most of these takes come from the same session
that produced dozens of outtakes that have been on the bootlegs market since
many years, but there are outtakes that mark their first appearance of a different
version, so the value of this release immediately increases. Tracks no. 1, 3,
4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 13 are takes that were never heard before. Let’s check them
all, the first surprise is Just My Imagination which is a different outtake from
the early vocal version present on Bird's Vault Vol. 2 (OBR 93CD038) and stereo.
The next three
songs Miss You, When You're Gone and Little T & A are the same as those found
on Bird's Vault Vol. 2 (OBR93CD038), but the sound quality here is much better.
You Don't Have To Go and Shame Shame Shame were previously released on Paris
Results Vol. 2 (OBR 305 CD019) but also on Place Pigalle (VGP 362) and Paris
Results (DAC 103) but there the tracks were sourced from an acetate not in very
good conditions with scratches heard throughout, this time instead they come in
a much clearer sound. Better sounding is also When You’re Gone (Redeyes) which
was first appeared on Bird’s Vault vol.2 (OBR 93CD038). Then Stay Where You Are,
Brown Leaves and Black Limousine are the same as those found on Sheep-Dip-Blues
(DAC 104), but there they were mono; this time instead they are here in stereo for
the first time, moreover the length of these songs is longer than those
previously available.
Lies take 2 is another
track never released before like Blues Jam; greatly improved too is this
version of Black Limousine if compared with the Sheep Dip Blues (DAC 104)
version as well as Little T&A take 2 which debuted on Birds’s Vault Vol.2
(OBR93CD038).
Everlasting Is My
Love (A Different Kind) was not included in The Incredible Art Collins Tapes Vol.3
and has now been added. Although its length is the same, I'm A Little Mixed Up
from the Undercover sessions that can also be found on Disc Two of The Incredible
Art Collins Tapes Vol.2 called Discovery Bar, is here in better shape and since
there was room on this disc the label decided to add it as bonus track.
All songs here
are presented as high-quality stereo soundboard, this work captures the studio
work feel of the Stones from over 40 years ago adding a new dimension to the
famous Paris 77 sessions.
This release
which includes a large number outtakes that appear here for the first time is a
must-have item for all collectors with wonderful content that can be said to be
the highlight of Art Collins Tapes and that has been separated from all the other
tracks, rightfully devoting a whole single disc to them. Had anyone the need to
find something not up to such high standard it will be possible to consider
artwork a bit dull as there are so many great shots from those sessions that
could be used as front cover instead of the Some Girls album ad.
