REVIEW: |
This release
presents a copy of an acetate featuring unreleased 1967 studio outtakes, that
was first published on Cosmic Christmas-Another Alternate Satanic Majesties
(RTR 016) box set, from which review we just report with minor additions:
The Bell
Sound Studio Acetate from 15 September 1967 for the first time released here;
these come from New York Bell Studios (not to be confused with L.A. Bell Sound
Recording) and surfaced first in 2011 on a single 12” which showed unfinished
songs with working titles and slightly different versions of songs that would
have ended on the Satanic Majesties album. The first 2 tracks are 2 versions of
Gomper Part 1 which are closer to takes 1 & 2; Flowers In Your Hair (but
was actually called Flowers In Your Barnett) is an instrumental with Nicky
Hopkins on organ and just Watts & Wyman, is close to takes 1 & 2 while
more interesting is another instrumental called Dream Pipe also known as Jam
One, which presents guitars as well, this take being close to no.7. Flying High
As A Kite is the first name of The Lantern, actually the instrumental backing
track that showcases some great piano by Nicky Hopkins supporting Bill Wyman’s
bass, then Acid In The Grass, a never heard before instrumental version of In
Another Land that seems to have an harpsichord played throughout (Brian Jones?)
at the beginning and features chorus. The last track of the acetate is Surprise
Me which is an instrumental version of On With The Show ending with a piano
coda by Nicky Hopkins. This is a nice chance for fans that have no possibility
to purchase the expensive 4LP,3 cd set.
