REVIEW: |
The Mayflower
label already released Beggars Banquet Sessions in a 3 discs set awhile ago,
but it had sold out and so out of the blue a 4 discs set comes out now, with
the best outtakes from those 1968 recording sessions. The first disc opens with
all 14 takes of Jigsaw Puzzle recorded on March 23rd of that year; they
are all instrumental takes (except for track 9 that starts with Jagger singing
some verses from At the Hop) featuring Keith Richards on slide guitar and Nicky
Hopkins on piano driving the main song’s theme, but it is possible that Keith
Richards plays also the bass on tracks 6-10. Nicky Hopkins creative piano
playing can be fully experienced in Track 9 where he really let his fingers run
free. Next come a couple of versions of Parachute Woman, early mix and the rehearsal
version from Rock n Roll Circus followed by three takes of Child Of The Moon,
the first one acoustic, the, the video and the backing track; after comes the
well-known first version of Street Fighting Man and finally two versions of Stray
Cat Blues that close the first disc. The difference with the 3 discs set lies
in the extra Child Od The Moon and Stray Caty Blues, the second one the
instrumental take. Disc Two opens with four versions of Jumping Jack Flash
(which of course have nothing to do with Beggars Banquet), the first being the
backing track and then the promo single and two more taken from the promo films,
followed by Street Fighting Man with longer outro and three takes of No
Expectations, the first two acoustic. Factory Girl with Rick Grech’s fiddle mix
is next and then four takes of Dear Doctor. After come three takes of Family and
a bunch of outtakes known with different names Blood Red Wine, Still A Fool
(Catfish/Two Train Blues), Give Me A Hamburger To Go (Stuck Out All Alone) and
the early mix of Prodigal Son with foot stomp on the left channel, so with
regards to the previous version we get one more Jumping Jack Flash and Dear
Doctor takes and 2 more takes of Family. Disc Three starts with two songs that
were in the 3 discs version on Disc Two: a version of Jigsaw Puzzle that has no
vocals overdubs and another well known outtake Highway Child a.k.a. Highway
Bound (most likely recorded at Redlands in February) although on back cover it
is referred also as The Vulture which was allegedly recorded in 1969; then
there are with 10 versions of Sympathy For The Devil (no.5 and 6 together) all
taken from the One Plus One soundtrack as well as the London jam presented
here; the second jam is called Untitled Jam, the disc ending with sympathy For
The Devil from David Frost tv special. Here take 5 is coupled with take 6 while
take 8 is split in two parts (a and b). Disc Four opens with two versions of
Family, the first on without bass and vocals overdubs and the second from Metamorphosis,
them the early take of Salt Of The Earth and 5 takes of Memo From Turner (again
no connection to Beggars Banquet); what follow then are two Rock and Roll
Circus recording sessions that came out on the Fully Finished Outtakes, Ruby
Tuesday and Sympathy For the Devil from the Olympic Studios rehearsals plus 4
from the actual Intertel Studios (2 Parachute Woman and 2 You Can’t Always Get
What You Want) which end the disc; here 2 takes of Family that were previously
on Disc Three. This release cannot be defined the definitive Beggars Banquet sessions
though, but certainly resents different songs than the average compilations
like this and a great sound output.
