REVIEW:

After the official release of the Exile on Main Street box set many labels have stopped issuing discs containing outtakes versions; this one is the first to present the versions commonly known as the Nicky Hopkins tapes together with other tracks coming from that era in excellent quality.

Basically Disc One has some songs that have nothing to do with exile (Jiving Sister Fanny, I m Going Down Hillside Blues etc.) as well as many official tracks (Shake Your Hips III, Shine A Light III) as well as songs that have been released on the Exile Remaster album in 2010; we can just get from this disc Sweet Virginia   that has no backing vocals, Sweet Black Angel which is the instrumental backing track and All Down The Line I acoustic version that are presented with no hiss at all.

More backing tracks on Disc Two: Let It Loose, Rocks, Off, All Down The Line, Rip This Joint, Soul Survivor which together with the Instrumental come from the Nicky Hopkins tapes. I had hoped they would have been not mp3 sourced but that does not seem to be the case, however these tracks are presented in the best sounding versions de-clicked and with no hiss, sporting clear stereo separation. A puzzling track is Ventilator Blues which seems to be the rehearsal take from Crossfire Hurricane, though there are vocals,  All Down The Line V is the early mix while VI is the US b single track which is slightly different from the one released on Exile, Turd On The Run conversely is official song, no known outtakes of this song are reported to exist.  The 1st Exile Blues is the basic track used to promote the album, the 2nd is in fact the same track with an announcer that speaks over it, none of these is the NME flexi version which included short excerpts of the songs Jagger referred to in the clip. Packaging is very nice with great photos, inside the front cover there is a list of other Stones releases from this label, unfortunately with some mistake(Rock n Roll Circus Outtakes called Beggars Banquet Outtakes), the inaccuracy is reflected on the sources printed on the back cover which are mainly incorrect.   So what can we say about this? Basically nothing new although collectors will find the outtakes on Disc Two is the best possible quality so far; hopefully some day they will come out in full hi-fi glory.
