REVIEW: |
This vinyl
release is from a couple years ago when this underground label decided to offer
the Stones Goat’s Head Soup outtakes in this format as well as on silver cd,
regardless from the Goat’s Soup Deluxe edition, but in fact using 2 of the new
versions here. The sound output is quite good, most of the selected tracks sound
real good in excellent stereo, in particular Separately is great. There are
some mistakes in the tracks sources, but that is a classic with bootlegs. What
is stunning is packaging that presents the 2 platters in either fluorescent
green or bright yellow, with the album jacket that presents great photos as
well as large written essays on the recording sessions.
These
sessions produced songs that were used also on following albums up to Tattoo
You were we can find Tops, here is the instrumental first take and Waiting On A
Friend, in its first version with Jagger singing Waiting On My Friend. Separately
is a well known instrumental take with Hopkins and Taylor painting great
landscapes, too bad it was unused, the track only been issued officially by
Mick Taylor in 1999 only in Japan (credited to him and Keith Richards) as bonus
track to the Japan version of Stone Alone, his version recorded in 1997. Toy
Should Have Seen Her Ass has come out officially as All The Rage, while Wind
Call also known as Windmill is another instrumental track featuring Nicky
Hopkins on piano. There are also 3 versions of Silver Train the first one
coming from 1970, but one of the best tracks is certainly the version of
Dancing With Mr D in excellent sound as well as the longer 100 Year Ago.
In short,
this collection presents Goat s Head Soup outtakes in excellent quality, some
are different alternate mixes or rough mixes, others are versions coming from
acetates often showing long versions; it must also be said that these
unofficial tracks are well known to collectors. Anyway, the audio quality is
superb and maybe a casual fan would wonder what has been wrong with said album:
Goat s Head Soup went three times platinum but it still isn’t considered au
pair to Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main Street as a seminal Stones release,
these collection proves the basic ingredients were there and we can recognize
them in the many songs that show their power and charm despite different production
treatments.
