REVIEW: |
The lack of
a counterpart to the Stones In Mono box has prompted interest on the Stones
early stereo recordings from many record labels, the last of which is Empress
Valley that offers this nice compilation, but incorrectly subtitled 1964-1970
since there is no 1970 recording here, the Jagger solo songs having been
recorded in 68 and 69. The interest in stereo versions of the Stones early
works aroused when Abkco released its SACDs in 2002 which provided a better
sounding version of what was found on Japan and German discs at the time. Another
attempt aiming at presenting stereo tracks from the Stones catalogue was
Rarities on Compact Disc (Westwood One) vol.16 and 20 while on underground
records we can point out: Dartford Renegades (Scorpio OM 9064 18), In stereo (Chapter
One 25203),
Mad Shadows (SC 91022),
Collectors Only no.2 (02), England’s Rarest Hitmakers (Ko 004), Ear Candy (TDR
139), Could You Walk On Water 2 cdr (Sister Morphine 14), Laid in the Shade
vol.1&2 (Porky Prod.), Stereo Rarities (GRA 001-4), The Alternates (Boss
Hawg), Satanic Majesties & Stereophonic (TDR 156), Stereo (SHZT 531), In Stereo
1964-1967(cdr), Stereofonic Stones (Porky Prod.), Time Trip vol.5 (Bad Wizard-Scorpio),
Strictly Stereo 64-69 (Arcade), Stereo Masters 2021,In Stereo (Ass Blaster 027),
In Stereo 1964-66 (no label), In Stereo Definitive BBC Sessions (WLR BBC 635) etc.
When this was announced there was hope they had located some other Chess
recordings which are known to exist in stereo, unfortunately this is not the
case; this is a nice release, although there is nothing unheard of, so waiting
for an official release this compilation could suffice.
