REVIEW: |
This concert
was at first made available from an official download. The Stones famous
Brussels 1973 concert is here, this album can be hardly called a bootleg as the
sound and production of this concert with Bob Clearmountain's work makes it a
real official release and the fact is that no physical format existed before. This
remaster by Cpt.Acid used for the main source the Quad mix bootleg. As a
bonus the older source transfered from tape by KRW CO from the Joe Maloney tape
of the broadcast has been remastered, so here are two sources remastered. Also,
in the bonus folder there is the version of Brown Sugar with sax solo, inserted
in the older version.
Anyway, it
is the music that matters and here we have it all in its overwhelming power and
clarity for the enjoyment of the fans and collectors. It must be pointed out
that the official release that has come in physical form with the Goat’s Head
Soup 2020 re-release just has Brown Sugar, Midnight Rambler and Street Fighting
Man from the 1st show. The King Biscuit Flower Hour tape of tracks
from London & Brussels 73 1st show has been the source of the many
Brussels Affair bootlegs that we all know. This was rebroadcasted by BBC Radio
6, it must be stressed that two KBFH tapes were broadcasted, the first on 29
September 1974 containing 9 tracks from Brussels 1st show (7) and 1
from London (Street Fighting Man) mixed by Jagger and Phil Ramone in early September
1974 at A&R Recording Studios in New York. The second KBFH radio show came
out on 24 November 1974 (repeated in the last week of December) offering 9
songs including Gimme Shelter and Doo Do Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) from London
plus Tumbling Dice, All Down The Line and Honky Tonk Women that was probably
doctored in the studio with some vocal overdubs. The musical output here is excellent
and it is possible to enjoy in full a spectacular version of the Stones early
70s power. The source for Disc One is KBFH Quad Reel a 3 cdr set that recently came
out in Japan offering the 29 September 74 quad mix on one disc, the front 2 channels
mix on another and the rear 2 channel mix on the last disc, the original radio
shows were housed on two 7” reels; this is a pre FM broadcast that just
includes Bruxelles 1st show tracks despite Wembley September 9th
concert being mentioned on the back cover, contrary to other releases like A
Brussels Affair (Chamaleon 8812) that included Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo /(Heartbreaker)
from the 2nd show and Street Fighting Man from Wembley or The Official
Brussels Affair (From the Vault) already mentioned that came out in 2011, where
Taylor solo on All Down The Line (2nd show) actually is taken from
the 1st concert. Comparing the two discs it is clear how deeper is
the first disc sound which can is certainly to be preferred, the actual improvements
are not that easy to detect with regards to the source, you will probably need to
listen many times to this in order to appreciate them, something that represents
a pleasant repetition anyway. Particulas mention to the artwork which is fresh
and tasty in color and design.
