REVIEW:

In 2024 we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Voodoo Lounge album, so this new project is a supplement to the sessions already posted (Voodoo Brew, Voodoo Stew, Voodoo Residue, Voodoo Lounge Writing Sessions) based on the new tracks and takes that appeared in recent years.

These new tracks came from Glimmerman, Leeroy Strange Leaks, The Fully Finished Studio Outtakes, Imthemastah's recent video upload (see FP 136) and previously overseen snippets that appeared here and there. So, in detail: Disc One, Part 1. You Got Me Rocking I -take 1 with Keith Richards on piano and allegedly Vinnie Karslake on bass (coming from Leeroy Strange Leaks) 2. Ivy League III - with vocals (coming from Fully Finished Studio Outtakes) 3. Alright Charlie III -with vocals (coming from Glimmerman), 4. Hands Off II -with audible vocals (coming from Fully Finished Studio Outtakes), 5. Don’t Want Somebody Else (coming from Leeroy Strange Leaks), 6. Medley:   Blinded By Rainbows – Anything For You – Guitar riffs – Drum solos - Moon Is Up - I Go Wild – Love Is Strong

(only the musical parts with exception of Moon Is Up), 7. Medley: Brand New Car - You Got Me Rocking – I Go Wild - Sparks Will Fly – Love Is Strong (with interview extracts) and as 2nd bonus, out of topic, extracts from Shattered (coming from Voodoo Lounge Special & EPK videos), 8. Medley: Hey Hey #1 (Ron Wood on guitar) - Hey Hey #2 (Ron Wood on guitar, Lisa Fischer) - 32-20 Blues (Keith Richards & Ron Wood on guitars) - instrumental (Mick Jagger on harmonica) - instrumental jam (Mick Jagger on harmonica, Ron Wood on guitar coming from Voodoo Lounge cd-rom recorded around December 11, 1994 at Video Studio in Minneapolis), 9. You Got It Made (backing vocals overdub) -Keith Richards & Ron Wood backing vocals overdubs (rebuilt collage using 7 musical extracts coming from the Voodoo Stew studio chat devoted to these overdubs). Disc Two starts with 1. Sparks Will Fly seq 1 – guitar overdub. The version used is close to version 4 (with the same laughter from Keith Richards at the end) … but without backing vocals, so probably anterior to #4; note that the sequence started at 1’17 from version #4, 1b, Sparks Will Fly seq 2 – banter & guitar overdub; this sequence contains the beginning of the previous overdub session, 1c. It was decided to combine both sequences: only 1 sec was lost between both versions (at 1’16). There is also a merged version with version #4 (1d) 2a - Sparks Will Fly seq 3 – guitar overdub. The version used is close to version 04: it’s the same version used on video 1 (so without backing vocals) …but the guitar overdubs are different, a merged version was done to compare them (2b), 3a. Sparks Will Fly seq 4 – guitar overdub. The version used is version 4 (the one with backing vocals) and the guitar overdub is different to the previous one. Another merged version was done (3b), 4a. Sparks Will Fly seq 5 – guitar overdub. The version used is version 4 (the one with backing vocals ) and the guitar overdub is different to the previous one; it was patched with a 3 second patch from 1’06 to 1’09. Another merged version was done (4b), 5. Baby Break It Down: the version used as basic track is version #3; because the end was a little longer (the fadeout shorter) it was decided to keep it, even if there’s no overdub on it. The gap at 0’10 was patched. 6. You Got Me Rocking – sax overdub: seq 1 The basic one used was a previously unknown version: more percussions with lots of piano; this song has different lyrics, they sound more confusing, so it was thought it could be anterior to #4, 7. You Got Me Rocking – sax overdub: seq 2, we have only the 2nd part of the song (started at around 2’); the basic one used is another previously unknown version without backing vocals but with lyrics more elaborated than on video 1 and #4. It seems posterior to the one used in video 1 but anterior to #5, 8a. You Got Me Rocking – sax overdub: seq 3. The source used is close to #5 (same lyrics) but without backing vocals and guitar overdub… so anterior to #5 but posterior to the others; a merged version with #5 was done (8b), 9a. Sweethearts Together - flute overdub: the version used is #5, note that seq 2 and 3 are identical to the end of seq 1 (they only listen 3 times to the same flute overdub) so only seq 1 was kept. 9b. A partially merged version was done using the flute overdub from 1’14 to 3’06. 10a. Sweethearts Together – soprano sax overdub: the version used is #5, a merged version from #5 with and without the overdub was done (10b). 11a. It’s Funny – sax overdub: the version used is #3 but the video sequence starts at 0’47; so a merge was done showing that version #3 was edited comparing it to the basic track used here; at the end, version #3 is missing a 12 seconds sequence (at 3’06) and also the last 40 seconds. Another merged version was done (11b).

Conclusions: about Sparks Will Fly the version used for the 3 first guitar overdubs is different to the one we know as #4. This version is anterior (without backing vocals) so the proposal is to name this version #4, then the already known version will become version #5 and the version used in Voodoo Lounge version #6.

Some complementary notes: about Baby Break It Down the first seconds are coming from an unknown version with Mick Jagger saying, at 0’10, something like ‘get up’… before the gap.

About You Got Me Rocking the versions used on the 3 sax overdubs are different from the known versions. As bonus was added a merge from sequences 1 & 2 of Sparks Will Fly so it is possible to appreciate Don Was overdub choices. Overall, this is a nice job that helps understand the many possibilities overdubs provide, even if noy used in the final product.
