REVIEW:

Here is DAC version of the recently surfaced Stones outtakes batches, the good news is that they are all found on this set, the bad news that they are still mp3 sourced.

However, on their ads for this release the label claimed it came from tracks ‘carefully corrected by fans’ a hint that it is a copy of Cpt Acid Remasters, where treble frequencies had been enhanced (Watts cymbals can be heard clearly now) and adding to that the known bias DAC has always had to boost the lower frequencies we get the best possible result so far. Here there are anyway 60 tracks, so apart from the 50 coming from the fully finished outtakes set, we have the 2 official songs that have appeared as bonus in the Japan edition of Goat’s Head Super Deluxe edition and the 7 new outtakes that leaked later, allegedly from Vinnie Karslake, Jo Wood’s brother in less brilliant shape. Having decided to present all these in chronological order these 7 takes are therefore positioned mostly in the Bridges to Babylon outtakes.

Disc Three Tracks 1 is a complete version of Keep It Cool, so now we shall examine the Keep It Cool saga. The first time this track appeared was version 1 which is the long one that starts with 2 count ins and lasts 20.57 (first posted by BKEYS on IORR, then on Foxes in the Boxes Vol.3 JEMS/WOW 123, the Virchov Tape (DAC 181) then on Undercover Complete Recording Sessions SBA 017, Undercover Definitive Recording Sessions Goldplate 1701, Undercover Sessions (Mayflower 135-8) The Art Collins Tapes & More EV 1288-89 and on The Incredible Art Collins Tapes Vol. 1 (DAC 200).

Version 2 the short one that clocked in at 9.54 on Foxes in the Boxes V.1 JEMS/WOW 12, then on a vinyl album of the same name by OBR 93036 and on silver disc on Undercover Complete Recording Sessions SBA 017 copied on Undercover Definitive Recording Sessions Goldplate 1701; then it appeared on Can’t Find Love (DAC 159) and on Art Collins Tapes & More EV 1288-89, Undercover Sessions (Mayflower 135-8) then on The Incredible Art Collins Tapes vol.1 (DAC 200). A slightly longer version 10.01 appeared on The Art Collins Tapes vol. 12-01 ending with drums as well as on the Incredible Art Collins Tapes Vol. 2 (DAC 201).

Version 3 lasts 5.24 and has finished with vocals and appeared on Fully Finished Outtakes Black Frisco Records 101-3 as well as on The Chronological Fully Finished Outtakes Acid Project Special.

Version 4 that can be found on Undercover Of The Night ZR lasting 27.05 is a fake looped version.

Version 5 was found on IORR, lasted 30.33 but ended with drums, contrary to

Version 6 which lasts 30.58 and was assembled by Cpt Acid who mixed 2 versions and can be found on The Art Collins Tapes & More (WLR AC 783).

Version 7 is this one which lasts 31.04 minutes according to the label, although the music stops again at 30.58 and the remaining seconds are dead air; this is called complete because it ends with the drums, although it seems to have been a Frankenstein operation too, just like the other three previous ones.

On this disc Track 4 (Strictly Memphis, has been patched adding the intro, having reversed channels; talking about editing, the noise sounds after Cooking Up and Flip The Switch have been removed.

Having examined the outtakes in previous reviews, it sounds pointless to re-do such work, although it must be stretched out that the so called Vinnie Karslake tracks were not part of Cpt. Acid Remasters. One stunning (in a negative sense) thing are front and back covers which show the band on stage in its latest years (Manchester 2018 and Lisbon 2014) which are completely out of context here; I haven’t rated as such the whole packaging because in fact the 2 inner sleeves with sources are precious and, although hard to read without a magnifying lens or a digital transfer, offer valuable information on overdubbing dates. All in all this is a valuable release and not just for late comers.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
