REVIEW: |
The Paris
sessions have been among the most productive in the Stones career, especially
the first ones held at the end of 1977 and at the beginning of 1978 which originated
Some Girls, the album of the band’s return to basic rock with some attempts to
other musical genres. On her last photo book Jo Wood, Ron’s former wife claimed
that when they were working in a studio every day the Stones engineers gave each
band member a cassette with the best of the previous day’s session and that she
still has all those cassettes stored in some huge boxes, we can imagine how
much unheard material is there waiting to be published
by a bootleg label! Meanwhile we have to rely
on what is being released and lately the Mayflower label has put out its best of
version covering those session and claiming that Discs One and Two come from
October 10, 1977, stuff better known as More Fast Numbers, while the remaining three
Discs contain the sessions from January 5, 1978. It is not exactly so, as can
be seen in the sources section. Unfortunately there are lots of mistakes on
track names , that have made difficult locate the sessions hen they were
recorded, many thanks to NZ from The Complete Works who helped on the hardest
identifications, which have been: on Disc Two Track 9 titled Someone Know that
is in fact What Gives You The Right, on Disc Four And I Know which is Never Let
Her Go and Lucky In Love that is
Do You
Get Enough (which became Don't Be a Stranger on SG Deluxe) and on Disc Five
Follow You and Feel No Pain No More that are respectively the instrumental
version of It’s Cold Down There and Piano Instrumental, these coming from the
Compass Point, Nassau sessions from early 1979 thus after the release of Some
Girls.
Apart from these mishaps there are anyway interesting tracks
in here, let’s mention:
on Disc Three 3 versions of Fiji Jim, there are 2 different
version of the instrumental I Can’t Help It, the last one Track 13, being the
known one with additional acoustic guitar added, while Track 12 is a previously
unknown mono take. Then there are two takes of Up Against The Wall
#2 previously
unknown to me (the first 3.56 long, the second 6.02). Golden Caddy
#3 here is in fact
Broken Leaves
#2.
On Disc Four we find 2 versions of Disco Musik (4.33 and 5.16
in lenght respectively).
Packaging is peculiar, instead of using a 6 disc Fatboy case
it was decided to use a double disc jewel case and a 4 discs Fatboy case with
their own artwork and wrap everything in a cardboard slip case.
For sure this is not the definitive version of the Some
Girls outtakes but this is an intriguing set that may arise the interest of die
hard collectors.
