REVIEW: |
This release from WLR
is in practice the copy of a work posted on IORR by a fan/sound engineer who
has addressed many Stones album sessions taking the best sounding tracks from
various bootleg releases and levelling the sound, adjusting pitch and speed of
each track, thus providing the ‘definitive’ version of every track (StoneyRoad),
too bad the label gave him no credit.
Soon on Disc One we
note the extreme guitars separation and excellent sound output each song has,
starting from Miss You, presented in many versions from the rough instrumental
first take to an almost finished polished one missing sax and harmonica and so
on. When The Whip Comes Down has a first version with early lyrics and no
backing vocals, lasting 10.06 and another version with pedal steel guitar just
1 second longer, while Just My Imagination a first version without organ, a
second one with it, a basic track with all instruments and a final unedited take.
Very useful information provided in the booklet where each track has the bootleg
it was taken from identified through its label number (ex. DAC 117) without
actually citing the whole name which would have requested more space; tracks
are also identified according to the sessions they come from, obviously all this
comes from the original uploader, not from WLR part, usually well known for being
inaccurate. There are small mistakes though, like Outsider Bird Records which
is shortened as ORB instead of OBR, of course not corrected by the label.
Disc Two has the early
version of Some Girls, followed by one with spoken words at the end, then 5
takes of Lies, the first with three guitars and the second with two. Next a
couple of versions of Faraway Eyes, the first without backing vocals and the
second with a different pedal steel solo. Respectable follows in 2 early versions
then Beast Of Burden with Jagger singing in falsetto. The disc ends with 3
takes of Shattered, 2 instrumentals and the last one with ghost vocals.
Disc Three is unusually
short (almost 45 minutes) and presents both version of Claudine, the early version
of So Young, 2 takes of Do You Think I Really Care? (one with pedal steel and
the other with more piano), 2 takes of When You’re Gone, an instrumental one
and an early lyrics version; then we get No Spare Parts early vocals and pedal
steel take and the first version of Don’t Be A Stanger.
Similarly short is Disc
Four which presents 3 versions of We Had It All without and with harmonica and a
more worked version, since they come from the 1979 sessions they can hardly fit
into the Some Girls sessions though; then follows a take from the RCA Sessions,
Tallahassee Lassie. Next are 4 takes of I Love You Too Much, the first a high
energy version, the second a shorter and slower early version, the third is an
instrumental with acoustic guitar, the fourth has backing vocals and more
finished lyrics. What follows are early versions of Keep Up Blues and You Win
Again, the disc ends with Petrol Blues featuring Stu on drums.
Disc Five has lots of
instrumentals, where there are two takes of You Don’t Have To Go #2 have been
mixed respectively with the same version located on Paris Results (DAC 103) and
on the Art Collins Tapes. The first vocal track is Disco Music followed by 3
takes of Everlasting Is My Love without falsetto vocals, with them and slide
guitar, with acoustic guitar and versions of Everything Is Turning To Gold, the
first one being long version almost 10 minutes long.
Disc Six opens with 2 takes
of Fiji Jim the second with additional lead guitar in the intro as well as 2
takes of Golden Caddy, a short and a long instrumental one; next comes Guess I
Should Know and 2 version of It Won’t Be Long a rough one with less instruments
and a longer one with additional keyboards. From the 77 sessions come It’s All
Wrong, Just Because I Told You and a bunch of instrumentals (Light Up, Los Trios
Guitaros, Muck Spreading Dub and 5 takes of Munich Hilton that range from 4 to
10 minutes in length, the first with more percussions and slide guitar, the
version next to last with more instruments added and the last one slower and
with electric piano, but coming from the 1979 sessions.
Disc Seven is the last
one that addresses the Some Girls sessions and starts with Never Let You Go followed
by 2 versions of Never Make You Cry, the first with chord changes announced by
Jagger and the second with an added electric piano, then the famous cover Shame
Shame Shame and 2 takes of Stay Where You Are, the first the known instrumental
version, the second an alternate mix involving sheep Dip Blues (DAC 1049 &
the Art Collins Tapes versions. Next are 2 versions of Summer Romance (nothing
to do with Some Girls), the former very aggressive with early lyrics as well as
the more relaxed latter. Up Against The Wall is an instrumental mixed with the version
contained in Place Pigalle (VGP 362), then we het The Way She Held Me Tight and
an early take of What Gives You The Right.
Disc Eight begins with
5 versions of Start Me Up, the first one the reggae take, then an early version
without backing vocals and a mix featuring beat in the background, another
early version but with backing vocals and finally the long version. Next come 7
versions of Hang Fire, an instrumental, an early lyrics take, another early
version with count in, a version with longer intro and piano, another without piano
and backing vocals, a version with the Doo Doo Doo chorus and finally another version
with piano. The disc ends with 2 versions of Vagina, the precursor of Slave,
the first with guitar working sequences and the second one a massive 17 minutes
plus version from working sessions, these however come from the 75 Rotterdam
rehearsals.
Disc Nine opens with three
more takes of Vagina and 3 of Slave from the 1980/81 sessions, the latter being
the version of the tune featuring vocals and on the last one sax. Next are 3 takes
of Little T&A from the embryonic instrumental version to the early lyrics
one and 4 of Black Limousine, the first early instrumental from November 73 in
Munich that features Ron Wood on guitar, then from 77 the remaining three with
early lyrics and various different intros.
Disc Ten is certainly
the worst sounding of the lot, with many mono recordings; after 2 more takes of
Black Limousine there are 4 takes of Neighbours, the first an early version
with guide vocals, then one without sax, another with more piano and an
additional guitar and finally the last one with different sax. From the
Rotterdam 75 sessions come then 6 takes of Worried About you, all instrumental,
4 slow and the last 2 fast; the song is played again in 1980 and we have it
here with different falsetto and backing vocals in 2 versions, the last about
10 seconds longer than the other. Two more Rotterdam instrumental takes of Tops
follow, then the 77 version with different lyrics and the disc ends with 2
takes of Heaven, an early 79 version with guide guitar and a 1980 take which is
the very first one with real lyrics.
The last disc ha in
practice just 2 songs, starting with No Use In Crying of which we het the short
early version, a long early version in two takes, the latter with the organ
coming in at 2.15 minutes, an edit of the first version (which is in fact
longer), a version featuring different voice in the second part and the last
one of the six with piano overdubbed. The other song here is Waiting On A
Friend if which we have the 75 Rotterdam working session instrumental, an early
79 take with guide vocals, an 80 take with lyrics, no sax not vocals in the
intro, another with vocals in the intro, a similar take but with more
percussions and then two takes with different and more sax, the latter ones
featuring Sonny Rollins. As a bonus track a mic of Slave from All Inside Our
Crazy Dreams (DAC 021) and the Art Collins Tapes (20/12).
All in all this is a
nice release, thanks f course to the original ‘maker’.
