REVIEW: |
This release
presents the lately released MSG full concerts from the 27th of
November and 28th November 2nd show unfortunately in mono.
According to the back cover these tapes are Glyn Johns unmixed mono soundboard
recordings of 2 MSG shows, however it is unclear if they come from the Abkco
2019 YouTube downloads or not. Glyn Johns raw tapes were released on Alternate Get
Yer Ya Yas Out (Moonchild Rec. MC 063), Best of 69 (WLR TRX) for both concerts
and The Abkco Shows NYC 27th Nov.69 (Rubber Duck RS050), MSG 1969
Day 1 (no label) for the first one, while just for the second one: MSG 1969 Day
2, The Abkco Shows NYC MSG 28 Nov.69 (late show). This release presents a
slightly better sounding version of these concerts, having been cleaned, de-clicked
(but some pops are still heard throughout) and patched wherever required (especially
Midnight Rambler and Little Queenie for the 28th second concert).
Soundwise the experience is a very nice one: those minutes awaiting Sam Cutler’s
introduction while the tension builds up and the first instruments touched
before the start of Jumping Jack Flash are paramount in showing a band as tight
as a fist both at the same time till swinging like nobody else on stage. Bill
Wyman’s bass presence is one of the highlights of this concert and generally
speaking of the whole 1969 US Tour, this recording pays homage to the band’s
power source in a way the famous Liver Then You ‘ll Ever Be never did. Then,
again, each song has its own moments, what else can we say about Taylor’s solos
during Sympathy For The Devil or Richards epic entrance in Midnight Rambler
that hasn’t been said? Watts beat machine runs on all cylinders giving substance
to all songs, while the great priest Jagger is at the stage centre with his
moves and guides all the dances, hypnotizing the crowds and filmmakers alike. The
second concert here presented is equally memorable with a better Sam Cutler
introduction where he introduces the band as The Greatest Rock’n’roll Band in
the World without hesitations, which will be exploited in the flamboyant Get
Yer Ya’s Ya’s Out introduction (a mini work of art which never got the deserved
appreciation). Will we get something else at the end of this miserable year?
Let’s hope Abkco will open its gates once more at New Year’s end (to me the full
MSG concert from 28 November afternoon will suffice), or how about some soundboard
show from 1970? Meanwhile listening to recordings like these is still a wonderful
bonanza.
