REVIEW:

In the previous volume (FP 138) have been presented all the audio parts coming from the rework of Imthemastah's video which were used by BlueTurns2Grey to create his video upgrade. This new volume will complete the mini-series devoted to the Steel Wheels sessions (FP 102 to FP 104). Here the line-up was: Mick Jagger on vocals and guitar, Keith Richards on guitar and vocals, Ron Wood on guitar, Bill Wyman on bass, Charlie Watts on drums and Matt Clifford on keyboards.

On Disc 1 only the musical parts from FP 138 are kept without any new reworking: only the banters and discussions have been deleted. On Disc 2, the recently appeared version of Giving It Up from the Fully Finished Outtakes collection was added completing it with some DIY versions combining, mixing or merging parts from the tracks of Disc n.1. So, track by track:

1. During dinner and before the session: banter over a playback of Continental Drift with Ron Wood adding some percussions with two cigarette boxes, then From Malaguena to Rock And A Hard Place, and RAAHP intro & 5. RAAHP #1 with Mick Jagger indications, cut abruptly, followed by Charlie Watts Warm-Up on drums. Spanish Flavored Warm-up (Malaguena citation) comes after followed by RAAHP #2 part 1 cut abruptly, RAAHP #2 part 2 stopped by Keith Richards, RAAHP #3 cut, (end missing); then we have a Banter by KR and & MJ clapping hands over RAAHP #3 (beginning missing), the  First Part of RAAHP #4 (part 1), RAAHP #4 (part 2), Warm-up Keith Richards blues improvisation and the First Mixed Emotions riff & jam, Work in progress 1: KR showing his ideas to MJ, Work in progress 2 & guitar riff, Work in progress #3 to #7 (short segments reconnected), from n.19. through n.22. Work in progress #8-# 12, 23. After we get 2 new steps, a new try-out until 2nd chorus, working on 2nd chorus, restarted on 2nd chorus, new try-out for Mixed Emotions stopped by Keith Richards. Listening to Mixed Emotions in the control room (fade in/out), Rehearsing Mixed Emotions with a flaw patched at 1’37, 30, Mixed Emotions #2: more elaborated music, approximative lyrics, very long version, banter over the previous recorded long version (beginning is missing), 3 MJ partial vocal overdubs, a short blues medley: unidentified blues/Phonograph Blues/Hellhound On My Trail a/k/a Hellhound On My Trail coming from an outtake from the 25x5 video.

Disc Two starts with Rock And A Hard Place #2 (combined version from 2 incomplete recordings: the beginning coming from track 8 and the second part from track 9: they’re connected at 2’03, Rock And A Hard Place #3 (combined version from 2 incomplete recordings:   the beginning coming from track 10 and the second part from track n°11: they’re connected at 1’28, Rock And A Hard Place #4 (combined version from 2 incomplete recordings: the beginning coming from track 12 and the second part from track n°13: they’re connected at 3’37. Then comes Mixed Emotions Work in progress (combined version, here two first steps connected: track n°24 & track n°26 connected at 1’32, Mixed Emotions #1: (combined version, 2 segments from track n°28 playback from control room reconnected at 0’57seconds, You’re not the only one (combined version) and a medley with segments coming from different banters not kept on Disc One, Mixed Emotions #2 (merged version from the studio version (left channel) and the control room version (right channel). Number 8 has some vocal overdubs (mixed and combined version, the first part (until 0’37) which are sequences 1 & 3 from MJ overdubs mixed together, then comes the sequence 2 solely until 0’59, then back to sequence 1 until 1’13, then the 2 snippets coming from the video 25x5. A short blues medley follows, it is Hellhound On My Trail (mixed version from FP 104 version with this video version: it created a more spatial effect, Mixed Emotions (merged version): the long version that appears on the video (named here Mixed Emotions #2) was recorded earlier than Mixed Emotions II (see FP 102). In the first part both versions are similar but an electric rhythm guitar is missing (in the video version Ron Wood was only playing an acoustic guitar) and some indications from Jagger have disappeared. Above all, in the final part of the song, the vocals are completely different, there are more keyboards etc.… Here it is possible to note these differences in the merged version presented: left channel from FP 102 and right channel track 30, while Giving It Up 2 is the shortened version of n. 1 with more piano (from Fully Finished Outtakes), here this version has been slightly reworked from Silver Lining (DAC 208).
