REVIEW: |
This umpteenth
version of the Undercover sessions could seem at first look another release of
the same stuff
already released by many
labels but it is in fact a copy of the Undercover Sessions 8 volumes we already
reviewed in here that had only appeared online, where the speed of the various
tracks that have surfaced so far has been corrected; a tiny difference here being
that some tracks have been split in 2 parts (Gotta Know You #1) with regards to
previous releases, with tracks that are presented in a somehow chronological order
concerning the sessions they come from. It is still a mystery why High School
Girl and She Was Hot #1 are in stereo while all other tracks coming from mid Oct.82
session are in mono; another puzzle is why are reverted Can’t Find Love #1
& #3. On Disc Four we find all 3 versions of Keep It Cool, the so called
first one long version that appeared on The Virchov Tape (DAC 181) starting with
2 count in and cut at the end, followed by version no.2 which is shorter from
Can’t Find Love (DAC 159) that begins with a fade in bit has proper ending; then
the version found on the Art Collins Tapes (there called no.1) which has real
start and end that is 7 seconds shorter than the previous one. Track 9 is the
full brass version of Pretty Beat Up. On Disc Five Show Me A Woman 1 & 2
are the rough embryonic versions of Tie You Up while Something I Want is also
known as Your Love. Still In Love 3 is also known as Dance Mr. K. Some more 82
session tracks on Disc Six which however ends with 3 songs from the early 83
sessions. Disc Seven has songs from the spring-summer 83 sessions where tracks
like Undercover got their final dress, unfortunately it was messed up on the
original uploads with the unnecessary distinction between version 4a and 4b
that confused everything after; Disc Eight offers many variations of Too Much
Blood, which however were all on 2 discs on Undercover Outtakes Vol. Eight,
here some are missing, it seems they just copied the second disc not realizing
the first disc has different tracks (only in this volume of the whole set!), it
would have been sufficient to look at the back cover, or to possess some intuition,
after all you don’t start numbering from i, do you? Some skills are required in
copying too, unfortunately this label proved once more its careless attitude.
