REVIEW:

This series of eight volumes represents an attempt to compile the Undercover sessions tracks that are in circulation and to rework them; this project was initiated in April/May 2019. In this era parts of the Art Collins Tapes (aka ACT) appeared in circulation on The Outsider Birds Vault volumes and also on DAC. Playing with them at first it was noticed they often had speed problems. First attempt to correct them began with the tracks that also appeared on official albums, making synchronization mixes to find out the exact speed. Lots of the files from the Undercover sessions on the Art Collins Tapes needed to be decelerated usually from -3,863%, sometimes they were already decelerated in the publishing volumes….. but not always at the correct speed.
So after having begun with OBR discs, then came DAC. Then it was decided to make a compilation of all the circulated material from the Undercover sessions. Finally it was decided to put all the   circulating versions in front of my reworked versions in order to let listeners make their own idea and delete what they don’t like.
Recently (March 2020) more ACT tracks came circulating. So all had to be checked to see what was allowed to be added to this compilation (in fact not much except the   Too Much Blood takes)
Obviously a lot of time was spent on this project. It was decided to post the lot it in 7 parts, with on each volume the first CD containing just the untouched versions and the second the corrected ones. The many versions of Too Much Blood on the last two cds without reworking them: they form the 8th  volume: in total there are 16 cds!
For this compilation the versions that were used for official releases (side b, dub version ...) have not been kept.
So let s examine the first disc, here the line-ip consists only of Mick Jagger on vocals, guitar, electric piano, drums and percussions, Keith Richards on guitar and vocals and Charlie Watts on drums, but not from the very beginning of these song writing-sessions); they gathered to prepare demos for the upcoming album Undercover.
the first version of  Can t Find Love is taken from Bird s Vault Vol. One (OBR 93 CD 037) and is the slow version with guitar & electric piano, the second track is Cooking Up first take (aka What I Am Sayin' Is True) that is the longer rehearsal take, followed by the shorter rehearsal version, both taken from The Virchov Tape (DAC 181).

Gotta Know You #1   part1 which features Keith Richards & Mick Jagger on drums. Then come High School Girl taken from Can t Find Love (DAC 159). She Was Hot #1 I from The Virchov Tape (DAC 181) is the early slower version with different lyrics. Wanna Hold You #1 from Bird s Vaults Vol. Two (OBR 93 CD 039) followed by Wanna Hold You #2 from Can t Find Love (DAC181) which is shorter and has Mick Jagger on backing vocals & probably on drums.

The band sessions held at Pathe Marconi saw the presence of Ron Wood on guitar and bass, Bill Wyman on bass, Jim Barber on guitar and bass, Ian Stewart on piano and Chuck Leavell on keyboards. From these sessions come All The Way Down #1 from (DAC 110) early version, All The Way Down   runtrough from Chainsaw Massacre (DAC 182) All The Way Down #2 from (ACT) -early version, more lyrics in the verses, Brown Leaves #4   (aka Dancing Girls) from The Pain Of Love (VGP 052) where is called Golden Caddy #3, an instrumental track with more instruments, Can t Find Love #2 from Can t Find Love (DAC 159) – with only drums, bass, guitar & vocals, then Can t Find Love #3 from Too Much Blood (DAC 182) featuring Keith Richards on backing vocals, two guitars, piano, drums (in two parts) and finally Can t Find Love #4 from Can t Find Love (DAC 159) with bridge idea, this being the full band-version including bass.

The second disc presents the reworked versions starting with Can t Find Love #1 slow version,
Cooking Up   #1, Cooking Up #2, then two parts of Gotta Know You #1 which however are not the versions taken from Mr. D Xmas gift from Uncirculated Bird s Vault tracks (FP 039). Wanna Hold You #1 was decelerated by -2, 460% so here it was more decelerated -1,4% to get the same speed of the other tracks. All The Way Down #2   was synchronised with the official version after a deceleration of -5,1%. Can t Find Love #3a comes from Too Much Blood (DAC 182) and features Keith Richards on backing vocals, two guitars, piano, drums (in two parts). Undoubtedly this second disc sounds way better tan the first one with tracks running at their correct speed and, due to the reworking thus also sounding better, most likely the definitive version of these takes.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
