| REVIEW: |
Here we
have Cpt Acid’s second attempt at the Stones Black & Blue Outtakes which
came out in early December 2025, after he already devoted 3 discs to those
sessions under the name Smack And Blow; this job has been copied and pressed by
Empress Valley. All tracks have been fixed with particular attention to
azimuth, phase and level correction, adding new equalization and working on few
files with Spectral Recovery. The main tracks come from Munichland Melodies
(DAC 088), but these are some earlier generation. Some notes on songs names:
Something Good was previously known as Act Together, Vagina is known as Slave, Cable
From My Baby was the working title of I Got A Letter ad Let’s Do It Right as C’mon
Baby.
We do start
with Hot Stuff which is the instrumental first version with Ollie Brown and Stu
on percussions easily discernible on the left channel, followed by Hand Of Fate
with distinctive guitar solos by Wayne Perkins. From late 74 Musicland Studios
sessions comes Cherry Oh Baby that features Nicky Hopkins on organ; this
version of Memory Motel comes from Munich 75 sessions and is an instrumental
version with both Wayne Perkins and Harvey Mandel on guitars and Billy Preston
on synthesizer while Hey Negrita is the early take of the song inspired (or
written) by Ron Wood that lasts 11.40 minutes. Back in time for this early shot
of Melody where we find Billy Preston on vocals and piano. On Fool To Cry early
version we get Nicky Hopkins on piano and synthesizer and no backing vocals,
but this is the version with finished lyrics; as for this version of Crazy Mama
it comes from Rotterdam like Melody and we do get different lyrics too. Carnival
To Rio has nothing to do with the Black And Blue outtakes, but this version has
a wrong start and some extra seconds at the beginning. Nothing new on this
compilation of outtakes but a quite enjoyable set of different versions that
could be interesting for beginners.
