REVIEW:

This new combo release focus again on the Stones Satanic Majesties album that was presented on RTR 004 which had tracks from the Satanic sessions. This box too has on its front cover a 10” version of the 3d Satanic photo but the title is now Cosmic Christmas which was the first considered title for the album. There is a nice 8 pages booklet with a Simon Goddard article called Their Satanic Majesties Distress that covers the 1967 famous events, this is a slimmer booklet in comparison with the other ones coming from RTR. The first two sides of LP 1 present the US mono edition, then come 7 tracks that are the main reason for this box, the Bell Sound Studio Acetate from 15 September 1967 for the first time released here; these come from New York Bell Studios (not to be confused with L.A.Bell Sound Recording) and surfaced first in 2011 on a single 12” which showed unfinished songs with working titles and slightly different versions of songs that would have ended on the Satanic Majesties album. Flowers In Your Hair (but was actually called Flowers In Your Barnett) is an instrumental with Nicky Hopkins on organ and just Watts & Wyman while more interesting is another instrumental called Dream Pipe which presents guitars as well, Flying High As A Kite is the first name of The Lantern that showcases some great piano by Nicky Hopkins supporting Bill Wyman s bass, then Acid In The Grass, a never heard before instrumental version of In Another Land that seems to have a harpsichord played throughout (Brian Jones?) at the beginning. The last track of the acetate is Surprise Me which is an instrumental version of On With The Show ending with a piano coda by Nicky Hopkins. After we have three US single mono (Dandelion-We Love You, In Another Land-The Lantern and She s A Rainbow-2000 Light Years From Home) but it must be said that both In Another Land and The Lantern are stereo (!) and then some other outtakes from the Satanic sessions, like 10 takes of 5 Part Jam, instrumental takes 3 to 7 of She s A Rainbow, takes 12,13 and then 2 to 4 of 2000 Light Years From Home and   takes 20-24 of Citadel. After some more takes like the 8th of 5 Part Jam, takes 14,15 of 2000 Light Years From Home, takes 4 to 6 and 8 and 9 of On With The Show, takes 2,3 of The Lantern, takes 25 through 32 of Citadel and takes 4 through 8 of Another Land. Finally some rough mixes and Instrumental jams including Gold Painted Nails and the rehearsal from 2000 Man song refrain.
