| REVIEW: |
Back in 2022 was released Perth 1973 which offered a remaster of the
famous Happy Birthday Nicky from the Oh Boy label, this release seems a 2nd
press of that sporting the same quality that made that release one of favourites
among Stones collectors. First of all, the channels have been restored since in
the Oh Boy release they were wrong, then pitch and phase corrected, but also
some missing sections fixed. In fact, taken from Live in Perth Australia
(Rockawhile) in two places they were patched: a short moment of Jagger speaking
before the intro to Brown Sugar and in the intro to Honky Tonk Women; moreover,
there was an annoying duplication in the original part between Bitch and Happy,
as well as fake ending (one is still here, though, because Taylor’s wah wah was
cut after Bitch, but continues after Rocks Off ended!). The Perth show was
released as soundboard in 1987 on a German vinyl album called Happy Birthday
Nicky (Noja 02), then came Rocks Off (TSP 056-2) & Happy Birthday Nicky (Noja
02), Will Keith Richards Wake Up In Time? (one of the latest vinyl albums to
come out some years ago before the re-birth of the vinyl market). On compact:
Live in Perth Australia (Rockawhile 89101) with Rip This Joint mis-named Let It
Rock, Perth 73 (RSCD73), The Party Down Under (RSCD 22) with tracks in
incorrect order, Exile Afternoon (no credit), Exile Afternoon Revisited (Turd
On the Run 001), Happy Birthday Nicky (Noja PPT 292), Happy Birthday Dear Nicky
(Sister Morphine 038), Happy Birthday Nicky (DAC 017), Back Strap Jacket
(Tarantura TCDRS 3-1,2), Happy Birthday Nicky (Halcyon), Perth 1973 Soundboard
(no label), Rocks Off (TSP 056) and as part of Tour 1973 (WLR 2135) 13 discs
box. 4 tracks appeared on Taxile on Main Street (Mecca TAX 1972) and Brown
Sugar on Rock’n Roll Stew (VGP 173) until 1.04. Then came Cricket Anyone? (Cpt
Acid 094) and Happy Birthday Edward (Mayflower 183). This release has a nice
natural sound, very spacious, artwork is fine although I would have liked a
photo of Nicky Hopkins on front cover, the man is playing at his best, check
Midnight Rambler where he really shines.
