REVIEW:

This release from Mayflower presents the Stones 2 available shows from Chicago 1972 since the first show of July 20th has not surfaced. The first concert has appeared on a tape that included 15 minutes of fans interviews and radio coverage, then released (minus the interviews and radio coverage) on Chicago ’72 (CBM 19) in 1999 as a poor recording marred by lots of speed fluctuations; not only that but there were some tracks missing and All Down The Line and Midnight Rambler were cut too. The version here is still a distant recording but shows a consistent sound; however, of course the cuts are still there as well as some distortion that could not be fixed.

The last show in Chicago was released on a tape having the same quality of the previous recording, then a better version came out on a cdr called She Liked The Way I Held The Microphone (Coast2Coast 15) which offered a good recording; in 2000 was released Sweet Home Chicago (VGP 256) that had a different and better source, coupled with Albuquerque. In 2013 was released again in Japan Rangement Blues (Libris/Odeon 2013) in mono, coupled with Knoxville. This was a good recording that grew while the concert developed showing a confident band playing the Universal Amphitheatre with the usual 1972 set. This release has a good stereo version of Chicago second show, though the audience is still noisy; the label’s remaster has increased the channels separation on Disc Two but also an annoying rumble, unfortunately.
