This project was initiated by the study of video reports attributed to
Benidorm and Zaragoza.
Since there was a need to compare them with
recordings of other Spanish shows, it was decided to offer this mini-series
dedicated to the Iberian Peninsula, including Coimbra from Portugal.
The line-up consisted of: Mick Jagger on vocals, guitar, harmonica and percussions,
Keith Richards on guitar and vocals, Ron Wood on guitar and pedal steel Charlie
Watts on drums, Darryl Jones on bass and backing vocals, Bobby Keys on tenor sax,
Chuck Leavell on keyboards and backing vocals, Lisa Fischer on backing vocals
and percussions, Bernard Fowler on backing vocals, percussions and keyboards, Blondie
Chaplin on backing vocals, guitar and percussions, The New West Horns on brass
(Tim Ries on sax and keyboards, Michael Davis on trombone, Kent Smith on trumpet).
For
this show, there were 3 sources in circulation:
Source #1 can be found on Body Licks (ROTH 140/141) or Licks In La Catedral
(AMM). This recording is lossless and complete, but the sound is distant and
there are some bumps due to overdriven bass.
Source #2 can be found on Live In San Mames (SRS Records). The sound is a
little better than source #1, but Like A Rolling Stone was incomplete. The
spectrum is a little limited, but the recording seems lossless.
This second source is the one found on this volume, supplemented for Like A
Rolling Stone by source #1. The right channel was a little overdrive, now the
recording has been de-clicked, the channels rebalanced (+5% to +10% for the
left channel), the transitions between tracks reworked and the phase upgraded.
In particular on
Can’t
You Hear Me Knocking because of a gap in source #2, was used a 26 second patch
coming from source #1; Like A Rolling Stone was cut abruptly at 0’45 in source
#2, the rest is coming from source #1) and the Outro comes from source #1
because it reproduces much better the hot atmosphere from the show.
A 3rd
partial source exists, taken from a couple of TV reports broadcast by Spanish
TV
; as bonus have been
added two merged tracks made using the partial Spanish TV newscast from Antena
3 - Noticias which was uploaded on YT. Here the video source is on the left
channel and the previous audio on the right.
On Brown
Sugar from 0 to 0’12 comes solely from TV report then is merged until 2’14 then
only audio (SRS) until the end (duration 4’39); Start Me Up from 0 to 2’12 is merged
with SRS, then only audio from SRS until the end (duration 4’32). All in all the
sound output is good although the main recording used is a bit distant, but
clear. Packaging is very nice.
