| REVIEW: |
The Stones stop
in Atlanta on the 1981 US Tour came out on tape on Atlanta, Oct.26, 1981 in
audience quality and on an untitled raw soundboard; on silver came out at first
In The Windy City (VGP 371) that offered the concert in audience quality
coupled with Des Plaines, then in 2005 was released Atlanta, Georgia Fox
Theater (Crossfire Hurricane) followed by Atlanta Fox Theater 1981 (DAC 029)
and in 2006 by Street Fighters 1981 (Pignose 106) all in mono soundboard.
This
recording was remastered already in 2022 when on most 1981 soundboards were
used multitrack recordings intended for radio broadcasts, but this was
different because it has been used a soundboard taken from the PA, part of a
massive wave of 1981 soundboard recordings that surfaced in 2005; however, especially
for the October concerts the effects of tape deterioration were apparent
though. All the releases sported such deterioration at the end of the show. In
2022 the recording had been upgraded, from after the All Down The Line cut onwards
when the sound started to wave a lot. So, all speed fluctuations have been
corrected as far as possible and both discs are longer than the DAC version
which was also marred by a tape cut after the start of Neighbours where a
splice in the recording was conspicuous, but not here. In fact on Atlanta Fox
Thater 1981 (DAC 029) the label tried to attempt a remedy by increasing the
high frequencies, but that increased the hiss too. This is a reissue of that remaster
which instead corrected the pitch carefully patching gaps with an audience
recording, adjusted the frequency range and volume reducing a lot the tape
warble thus creating the definitive edition of this concert, which was special
because played inside in a small theatre and also because it had the first
appearance of Chuck Leavell on stage with the Stones for the whole concert.
Note that on Disc One on Let Me Go from 2.28 through 2.51 an audience recording
is used to supplement missing part, as well as on Disc Two on All Down The Line
there is an audience patch from 2.49 onwards and on Hang Fire from the start
through 0.22.
