REVIEW:

This release from EVSD presents Cpt Acid’s remastered version of the famous Philadelphia 1972 recordings that have been pitch corrected where needed, phased and level corrected as well as newly equalized, strangely enough though this time Cpt Acid is not mentioned on the cover; it is possible that the label re-worked that a bit since there is no hiss heard here. These famous recordings were assembled in order to prepare the live album that never was released officially after the 72 US Tour, although broadcasted later allegedly by WMMS a Cleveland radio station; anyway, the first Philadelphia show was also recorded by Radio Luxembourg. The Stones themselves worked on the tapes in October 72 with Bill Wyman that overdubbed some of his bass works too. The first releases were on vinyl on titles like The Great Lost Live Album (The Swinging Pig 006), Jack Daniel’s On Tour (RSVP 006), Mick Taylor We Miss You (RSVP 001), Philadelphia Special 2 LP (RSGL 72), American Tour 72 3LP (Musichien SB 72), Cherry Oh Baby Vol.1 5 LP box (01-105), Command Raid (RS 90 8078), Commando Raid (ELJ A 7372), Good Time Women (WOM 12) London Mixes (OBR 305 014), Plug In, Flush Out 4 LP (Soundboard ISB 72).

On compact Apart from Touring Party Vol.1-3 (Rattlesnake 048-054), the 20th July show has come out on Deuces Still Wild (Sister Morphine 033), Keep Your Motor Running (VGP 243), Deuces Still Wild (S. Morphine 33), Wingless Angels (VGP 153) and later Plug In, Flush Out 4cd (VGP 259) and 3cd (SODD 056-058), Very Ancient, Thank You Kindly (Scorpio 030), London Mixes (PKO 9303), American Exile 3cd (Scorpio Am.Ex.72), The Philadelphia Project (no label) and More Philadelphia Special (no label) and as part of American Tour 1972 box (WLR 2119). The other shows of the 21st July were also released combined on many titles as Philadelphia Special 1 and 2 (TSP 050 and 060 and VGP 260), then on The Great Lost Live Album (SODD 016) with the vinyl version on bonus cdr, Love in Vain (G. Dane 9007), on the re-released Philadelphia Special (SODD 004) that had the Ft. Worth 2nd show on with the same title and the 1st show on a bonus cdr. This title came out again (Exile EX 004) mixing together compact and vinyl sources in order to get a better picture of all the gigs and the sound actually was very good with less hiss; notably also a mini LP paper sleeve edition (02080107) exists as well as a Japan box (FS 1-94101). Then a 2011 version called Philadelphia Special De Luxe (Moonchild 001) came out actually presenting the recording from a lower generation source with the total absence of hiss in comparison with what usually these songs present. Cpt Acid’s work in 2021 was called Philadelphia Specialties Plus (AP 057) and offered on two discs the remastered version plus the same bonus tracks found here on Disc Two.   Just this year another single version of Philadelphia Special (No Label) came out offering a new rip of the vinyl bootleg. Other titles where we can find recordings from both 21st July concerts are: The Best Of Live in Concert (L. Legend 070), Hot Stuff vol.1 (G. Dane 9416), Sympathy for the Devil (On Stage 12004), Sweet Virginia Rain (Oil Well 077), Brown Sugar (Allegra 9016), The First Decade (BB003), Unreleased Decca Live Album (Stonehenge 003 and Speed King RSVP 666), Gonna Bust Another Bottle (S. Morphine 35), Ladies & Gentlemen (MD 02), Touring Party Vol.5 (DAC 192) and a newly released Philadelphia Special (no label) with pitch corrected. Finally, this same label released one song (Uptight-Satisfaction) on Sticky, Beggars Bleed in Exile vol 2 (APCD 053). Coming to this release the original sound was already excellent, although with too much hiss which has been removed here without compromising the high frequencies, special mention for having split the 20th and 21st July recording in two discs, so we have all soundboard tracks on Disc One. Stereo separation is sharp here, the brass section is particular shines in full, possibly also thanks to a recording that does not mix them down using them as sound fatteners. Apart from this on Disc Two are also special bonus tracks from various other 72 Tour locations in audience shape, contrary to Cpt Acid’s version Dead Flowers and Don’t Lie To Me are in soundboard and even the Vancouver tracks sound better.

Packaging is very nice, presenting the usual front and back cover shots with updated track listings.
