REVIEW: |
Just 2
years ago there was the release of the Stones In Stereo 1964-66 which prompted
interest on the Stones early recordings in true stereo, here is the 2nd
press with different cover. A similar release came out digitally in the past
from Ass Blaster label, but this is a real silver release presenting a
collection of early stereo Stones tracks. The remarkable thing to say on this
compilation is its great sound quality, balanced on all tracks with no hiss
whatsoever.
Ever since 1964 in Chicago the Stones
were recorded on multi tracks and some of the songs recorded for their no.2
album have even been released in stereo, while some are well known and heavily
bootlegged, others are kind of unique; it must be said that for instance the
songs recorded at Chess Records were all mixed in stereo and then folded down
for mono release, simply true dedicated mono mixes of some songs do not exist.
If You Need Me was released remastered on the In Mono box set. Everybody Needs
Somebody To Love is the only stereo track sourced from vinyl, not released on
cd, this being the 5 minutes plus longer version that appeared on the UK no.2 album;
The Last Time that is 15 seconds shorter than the mono mix but presents a high
quality recording, the Satisfaction mix here is the wider stereo one while Play
with Fire has lead guitar and harpsichord on the left channel and
tambourine/percussions on the right channel. Paint It Black is 20 seconds
shorter in stereo rather than in mono. On 19th Nervous Breakdown
there is no distortion at the beginning, on We Love You we can here the chain
clanking at the beginning going from left to right channel. E
arly
pressings of the ABKCO Hot Rocks CD had Heart of Stone in stereo as well as the
Regent (organ intro) version of Time Is On My Side. Later pressings have a
version of Heart of Stone with the first few notes in stereo albeit in much
lower fidelity followed by the mono mix, as well as the Chess (guitar intro)
version of Time Is On My Side in mono. The SACD Japan cds have what seems to be
a new stereo remix. This is yet another nice underground compilation getting
official and underground release which have the common quality of being of excellent
audio quality, will it be the last one coming out?
