| REVIEW: |
This
release from Mayflower addresses the sessions for It’s Only Rock‘n’ Roll just
like he previous single disc release with the same name that came out from the
same label some years ago with number MF 129, all tracks are well known but in
excellent sound quality. The collection starts with the one and only take of
Through The Lonely Nights, despite what is written on the track listings,
followed by Slow Down And Stop a quasi- instrumental from the Musicland Studios
in late 73 and by the first take of It’s Only Rock’n’Roll featuring Ron Wood on
guitar and David Bowie on backing vocals. Next are 2 versions of Too Many Cooks
and more tracks from Musicland Studios in the spring of 74.
Disc Two features a bunch of tracks from
Stargroves, recorded with the RS Mobile including take III of
You Can t Rock Me (miscalled take 2 on track
listings, which was the officially released one) followed by tracks coming from
an acetate: the long and edited versions of Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, Till The
Next Goodbye, Dance Little Sister and Fingerprint File which is slower. Next is
Time Waits For No One longer mix which surfaced on a Japan SACD version of the
album. The ever present promofilm soundtracks from the LWT studios are next and
the disc closes with Scarlet version 1, which lacks overdubs, while the
mentioned version 2 supposed to have an overdubbed guitar solo by Jimmy Page is
still missing. This release has excellent sound and nice packaging with all
tracks ordered in time, let alone the usual misleading information on their
sources.
