REVIEW:

John Mayall's Bluesbreaker 1983 European Tour was a short event ( 20th May to 14th June) but produced some great recordings that have ended up on bootleg, most notably Wiesen that came out on vinyl album as Dark Side of Midnight, with an excellent sound. This time is Paris night that is being released by SDR Records, a label that needs to be thanked because of its great output although on CDR. This concert isn't complete unfortunately, missing "Room To Move" and "Riding To Santa Fe", but it is an excellent recording indeed. Taylor's guitar stands out for clarity and intensity of his licks, the whole band giving him more room allowing fluid solos to flow on each song. This version of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers was short lived but musically very good, too bad it didn't last much. The recording features all instruments in a wide stereo, the most that can be asked to an audience tape. Packaging is superb with great front cover whose lettering reminds officially released Mayall albums, clear back cover with song list and picture discs. Performance is excellent too showing a perfect blues machine driven by Mayall through various blues standards between which Buddy Guy's "My Time After A While" and Freddy King's "The Stumble" stand out, but mentions have to go to "Catfish Blues" and original compositions like "Looking For Willie" and "Sitting Here Alone" a slow blues where Mayall's harp plays great solos.
