| REVIEW: |
Mick
Taylor’s last concert with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers was in Hamburg on 23rd
May 1969, this gig in Bremen came just one day before that. The line up
featured John Mayall on harmonica, keyboards, guitar and vocals, Mick Tayor on
guitar, Steve Thompson on bass and Colin Allen on drums. A Soundboard from 1969
is something that should be treasured especially because of the occasion that
shows a young Taylor just a week before he joined the Stones. This gig was
originally played in the Die Glocke or Bremer Konzerthause and the setlist
consist of Mayall’s songs and classic ones that will be in his repertoire for
the years to come like Parchman Farm that features, during its 13 minutes,
extended organ and harmonica solos by Mayall himself and a nice guitar solo by
Taylor too. Anyway talking about this release it shall be said that the first
song has been called in various ways over the years: Never Satisfied here, but
also Don’t Worry Baby in other releases, actual title being Got A Pretty Baby;
we shall also be thankful that on a track called 2401 Taylor is finally been
given the go thumb in order to ride with his guitar playing. The end of this
setlist has The Time Has Come introduced by John Mayall as a totally unknown
song which features a classic Mayall organ solo, then follows Down The Line, a
slow blues played with gusto from the Bluesbreakers, ending the set with Going
Down The Road which on a previously reviewed digipack called Live on Stage from
WLR was called It’s Alright With Me. This show was also released as Live in
Bremen 1969 (Midnight Dreamer 262) and as Bremen 1969 (Wet Dreams 022) and was
originally broadcasted by Radio Bremen 2, one of the most active radio stations
of the 60s German scene that has recently been rebroadcasted. It shall be noted
however that this concert has been officially released in 2021 as part of the 35
discs box called The First Generation.
