REVIEW: |
Los Angeles has always been a particular stop
for every tour John Mayall included, this concert being no exception. This
recording comes from two sources, source #1 was posted on IORR by ‘Dan’ - a big
thanks to him and to the original taper! Source #2 is an incomplete recording
(6 tracks) from an unidentified venue … and it turned out to be from the same
show as the one posted by Dan! Due to the quality of this recording, it was
decided to keep these tracks and complete them with Dan’s source; however Dan’s
source had to be accelerated by 3,5%.
A
s
usual, the transitions between tracks had been reworked and the beginning and end
of each disc upgraded. This show is particularly interesting because of its
unique tracklist and its many guest musicians; too bad it cuts out during Muddy
Waters Blues which most probably wasn't the last song played on that evening.
The recording has many guests notably Walter Trout on Dust Mt Blues, Get Me
Some Dollars and Muddy Waters Blues; Buster Cooper on trombone and Red Holloway
on sax play on Italiano Style, Checkin’ Up On My Baby and Streamline; all of
them guest on Stormy Monday, while on Eli Stole My Baby the guests are
Sugarcane Harris on violin as well as Buster Cooper and Red Holloway. The
addition of brass adds a new dimension to songs like Checkin’ Up On My Baby.
This recording is good but not excellent, on Disc One there is great channel separation
but at times there is some echo, Taylor’s guitar can be heard well though; Disc
Two is worse, sounding too muddy.
