REVIEW:

Before embarking in their rushed up US Tour in 1978 the Stones entered the Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York together with Stu and Bernhard Harvey on keyboards until 7th June when Ian McLagan arrived in order to practice for the upcoming tour. The recorded songs from these two weeks sessions have been released many times. These recordings came out at first on vinyl on the 2 lps called Tour Rehearsals (VD 19/20) then copied on cd and also as Back to the 50s (RSW 1234) 2 LP and Cocksucker Blues (RS 001). On cd The Woodstock Tape (Idol Mind Productions 003), then as The Complete Woodstock Tapes a 4 cd box (VGP 130) and with the same title a 4 cds digipack issue from Red Devil (001-4), as Hip Shake 1978 (ML 001), 1978 Tour Rehearsals, It’s Only Reggae and Roll (RTR 003) 3 LP,2 cd and The 1978 Woodstock Rehearsals (Mighty Diamond 027) label; then came out Pearls at Swine (Turd on the Run 002/003), The Complete Woodstock Tapes (OMS 001-4), Rock & Roll (No Pigs 7381091-018), two gatefold double sets called Woodstock Reh. Vol. 1 & 2 (Palladium), lately on 1978 American Tour (WLR212) 13 cd box and recently a 4 cd set by a Japanese no label.

Various tracks can be found on Itchy Fingers (IU 9535) Made in the Shade 1978 (IU 9537), BlueS Stones (Luna 9315), Through the Vaults Darkly (Godfather 195-6), One Night With Tallahassee Lassie (ER 19-20), Some Girls Memories (RG 03), Greatest Rarities Vol.2 (Adam Vault 049-30)The Missing Years (G.Dane Sat 3), More RnR Circus (L.Legend 058), Hot Stuff vol.2 (G.Dane 9417), Cocksucker Blues (SODD 136), The Real Alternate Exile Album 6 LP,4 cd (RTR 014), The Club Gig (Raid Masters 910710).

Here we have great stereo tracks with many instrumentals where Richards and Wood joined forces well supported by the piano and keyboards players. As usual the action performed included

phase, pitch & level correction, in the end new EQ. Also, few tracks were edited by deleting long silence and some tune ups. Most of the instrumentals are on Disc 4. What was used was the torrent shared at The Traders Den by julsay, but some tracks were missing, so the missing ones were sourced from the Complete Woodstock 1978 Tapes (VGP-130).

There are still some analogue noises, especially on some tracks on Disc 3, most probably caused by some bad guitar cable or something similar, there was not anything that could be done about it, so they have been left as it is, sometimes shit like this happens on rehearsals, even on gigs.

Good thing about this set is the lack of substantial hiss that somehow marred other releases, indication of a somehow good remastering job.
