REVIEW:

Here a new series that intends to present the shows that happened in 1992-1993 in the States; Tumbling Dice is a combo whose line up was set up to play some music that is often left to the jam sessions occasions in Florida. They were Mick Taylor on guitar, Bobby Keys on sax, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, Fuzzy Samuels on bass and John Lorry on drums and were billed as Tumbling Dice. The recordings are soundboards and offer proof of the great sounds achieved during that period, with many instrumental tunes and standard blues songs played with confidence in three different venues. Taylor guitar is let loose and the concerts always start with Freddie King Hideaway. Bobby Keys sax is given more room than often in many concerts and has his solo spot during breaks in songs like Mercy Mercy written by Joe Zawinul for Cannonball Adderly. Also, Nicky Hopkins has a chance to showcase his many different influences in an instrumental called Edward, his nickname, that presents many familiar piano themes with the help of Taylor bluesy approach that underline his special keyboard work, we feel or remember music passages that belonged to Quicksilver Messenger Services or even appear in some great jam albums like Jamming with Edward. An instrumental by King Curtis Soul Serenade follows with Bobby Keys lead sax paving the way for this great ambient tune. The set ends with Can’t You Hear Me Knocking which has Hopkins on piano and Keys on sax leading the way and in the middle it has a total different approach even to Taylor solo treatment of the song. Then Albert King’s I Wonder Why closes off a very special night.

These recordings are clear as an official records and a joy to listen too, they were originally released in 2004 but are now being reworked. This recording was released as Mick Taylor in Florida cdr and Tumbling Dice Florida Gigs (Tumbling Dice) 3 cds that included the May 1st and 2nd recordings. For this show there were two recordings coming from the same source, the completest and lossless version was used. The channels have been rebalanced (+15 to +25% for the right channel) and the sound a bit amplified. As usual the transitions between tracks have been reworked so now each one starts with a song; it must be noted that there is a fade in/out before Can’t You Hear Me Knocking. This recording is so food that could be taken to be a soundboard, due to the excellent sound output. In the promotional flyer for this concert reproduced on the front cover the band is called the Rolling Stones Alumni and the presence of Taylor, Keys and Hopkins certainly justifies that. This is a very enjoyable release, so much so that it should have been official.
