REVIEW: |
This double
disc set is the first in a series of recordings called The Drugstore Tapes,
featuring Mick Taylor and Rhythm Kings unreleased tapes stemming from a
collector whose express wish was not to see them posted on any forum or torrent
site. They come from uncirculated master DAT recordings made over the years
from 1997 through 2004 in
Hamburg or close
German cities. The line up consists of
Mick Taylor on guitar and vocals, Max
Middleton on keyboards, Jim Mullen on guitar, Michael Bailey on bass and Richard
Bailey on drums. Notes from the discs maker: h
aving a
recording in such good condition my work was easy: I only had to edit the
tracks, prepare them to be burned on two discs and create covers. In fact the
sound output is fantastic, the best you can get from an audience recording with
no distortion whatsoever and audience noise only at songs ends. The songs are
the usual ones played by Mick Taylor during the late 90s but the addition of a
second guitarist, jazz rock pioneer Jim Mullen whose solos are very distinctive
adds ultimate smooth sophistication to the usual blues tinged Taylor sound, like on the 15 minutes plus version
of Blues in the Morning that opens the show. In fact the rhythm section too is
very jazz oriented featuring Michael Bailey on bass who, apart Taylor
s band, played with various and different acts like Lindisfarne
and Mark Knopfler and Richard Bailey on drums from the Incognito group (no
relation between them). After I Wonder Why Taylor speaks to the audience
excusing the band for not wearing stage uniforms because their luggage got
stolen. The version of You Shook Me that follows is another showcase for Taylor s blues licks and
tasty descriptive playing style. The second disc opens with a version of Goin
South lasting almost 22 minutes where the band s rhythmic abilities are highlighted,
the music becomes jazz rock for a while, in the second part of the tune the
band members are introduced after their own solo. Next is
Dylan s Blind Willie McTell, the moody song Taylor fell in love with that is played with his great
vibrato that enhances the dramatic lyrics covering slavery issues, the unusual
chords sequence add charm to this song Taylor
mixed with Hendrix All Along The Watchtower. The concert ends with the encore
Boogie Man, a cover of Freddy King s song.
Packaging
is essential but nice, with just one photo on back cover of the concert hall and
clear songs listing.
