REVIEW: |
This new
release from Mayflower presents both Stones Copenhagen 1973 shows.
The first
show in Copenhagen in 1973 came out as Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen (VGP
007), then on Greatest Dane (VGP 045) in 1995 featuring the whole concert. Then
was Shaved Discs to present this concert together with a full recording of the
second show in Grateful Grateful Copenhagen (S.Discs 009-010) but mistaking them;
another cd featuring the first show came out as An Afternoon in Copenhagen
(SODD 072) in 2008. In the same year was released Danish Brew (DAC 084)
featuring both shows, the first one in stereo, the second in mono. A better
source can be found on CPH-Oct.7th, 1973- 5 PM (No Label) while
Copenhagen ‘73 (No Label) had again both concerts in stereo. The second show
came out on vinyl first on a bootleg called Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen (No
Label 006) when it wasn’t known there had been two shows that day and featured
10 songs only from the concert; on silver disc apart from the aforementioned
S.Discs, DAC and No Label sets, it was released also as Are You Ready
Copenhagen (AYR 13.38.37) offering a very good audience recording and a
complete concert, despite Street Fighting Man not shown on cover. The
aforementioned Copenhagen ‘73 was issued in Japan presenting both shows together
and especially the first one from a newly discovered source is interesting.
Performance
wise the first show is played rather well as well as the second one which has a
steadier performance with some songs having a better feel than on the first
show. But essentially both shows are enjoyable, especially because in this
release, although having an incomprehensible title, are here featured in very
good stereo sound that despite the occasional distortion mark them among the
best recorded concerts of the 1973 Euro tour. Packaging is nice, except for the
title which really doesn’t make any sense, this label should eat humble pie and
check before issuing such titles.
