REVIEW: |
This
release presents the well-known Chicago club Stones 2002 Licks gig, a theatre
show that happened in major cities in what was then a pretty innovative touring
strategy. Seeing the Stones in a club or theatre had been the hope of many
collectors and thanks to this brilliant idea many have experienced not only a
great atmosphere, but a unique bunch of set lists and not on the first part of
the concert only, but on the second as well.
The stop in
Chicago s club happened at the Aragon, this concert was released as Aragon (Gig
23cd), and Aragon (Lick 03), as part of Going to Chicago (VGP 321) 6 cds, as
Licks Chicago Ballroom (Exile 27-28), Everybody Needs Chicago Blues (Glimmer
Twins 20-21), Touring band 2002 (Godfathers 08-09), Don’t Look Back Baby (Pignose
008), Aragon, Chicago 2cdr, Ballroom Blitz (Banana Rec.160902), The Stones Take
Aragon (Phoenix 0356493), Dance Aragon (Lixx20020916) and Some Licks from the
Ballroom and on the 13 discs Licks 2002 US Canada Tour The Theatre Shows Pt.1
(WLR R 204). 3 songs are on Going to A Go Go-Live Licks 2002 (MD 2010), one
song on Ultra Rare Lips vol.1 (C.Cat 687), 10 songs on We Can’t Turn You Loose
(G.Twins 22-23), 4 songs on Rare Licks (RS4), 1 song on It s Only Rock n Roll
(Red Tongue Rec.03) 3 LP,2 cd box.
This is a
nice recording that seems to come from two different sources, the first is a
quasi mono recording, but from Everybody Needs Somebody To Love it switches to
the second one which is a better and wider stereo one; the same thing happens
on Disc Two from Honky Tonk Women onwards; this disc ends with Angie from the
Atlanta concert.
As usual
phase and level correction and new equalization applied to this recording that
was remastered by Captain Acid back in November 2021.
This was
one of the best of the club shows the Stones in 2002 with a great setlist,
first-ever performances of songs, special guests and an inspired show. There are
at least 2 other common sources of this show, but this one is considered the best.
A friend recorded this with CSB mikes about 25 feet back on the right side and
the sound was perfect. The crowd noise is minimal except when Bono came onstage
unexpectedly on It’s Only Rock and Roll; also, on I Just Wanna Make Love To You
is Dr. John to come on stage. In fact this is really a nice recording that stands
out for its great pure sound.
