REVIEW: |
This
release presents the second night at Oakland Stadium 1989 as the first came out
as Vol. 108 in JEMS Lost and Found series and so it was time for the second
show on November 5, which features three setlist changes from first night, all
of them welcome with One Hit (To The Body), Play With Fire and Little Red
Rooster replacing Harlem Shuffle, Angie and Dead Flowers respectively. Here are
the liner notes that cane with these recordings:
“The Stones
should be praised for performing songs like Undercover and One Hit on the 1989
Steel Wheels tour, as they came from albums released during the band's hiatus
from touring 1983-1988. They also dipped somewhat deeper into their back
catalogue in '89, at least in terms of playing songs that long felt difficult
to pull off in a stadium, such as Ruby Tuesday and 2000 Light Years From Home
which are highlights here as is Play With Fire.
As is well
know Mike "The Mike" Millard was no fan of stadium shows, but Steel
Wheels featured reserved seating up close but Mike had an inside connection to
get good seats, which allowed him to record the show at something approaching
his legendary standards. One small bit of trivia, in 1989 Millard switched from
his long-standing preferred blank tape, TDK SA 90, to Maxell XLII-S 100 minutes
tapes, which gave him more runway to flip without missing a song. Those Maxells
are the tapes used for this show and the night before.
While he
may not have favoured stadiums, Mike got better results than most out of them; the
sound on his November 5th recording is relatively close and
balanced, with limited audience interference. Month after month we rely on the
contributions of many to keep the Lost and Found series rolling. Thanks to
Professor Goody for pitch work, mjk5510 for post-production and artwork, and
kif for the updated JEMS logo that graces this back cover.
Finally,
cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone; his work never ceases to
impress. May he rest in peace.” Examining this release we cannot help noticing
how great sounding it is, in pure Millard style; this concert was previously released
only on a 2 cdr set called Shakin’ the Bay Area
and as part of a 4 cdr set called Oakland Stadium November 4 & 5
1989.
