REVIEW: |
The lack of
consistent outtakes releases from the Stones has prompted many underground labels
to issue continues collections of unreleased studio tracks which arise the
interest of many collectors. The name of the
game has now turned more on quality rather than on
newly discovered tracks (OBR excluded) and Mayflower
label has re-entered the arena after taking a pause in issuing studio titles
(the latest was Exile on Main Street Sessions) and now proposes the Goat s Head
Soup Sessions we are reviewing here.
The sound
output is quite good, the selected tracks do sound good even if there are some
mistakes in the tracks sources, for instance it is not clear what the
difference is between Fast Talking (Track 2) and Fast Talking Slow Walking
(Track 5) on Disc One they are the same outtake but given different recording
dates and locations.
These
sessions produced songs that were used also on following albums like It s Only
Rock n Roll , like Through The Lonely Nights, whose version here is the
official single one, but also Tattoo You were we can find Tops, here is the
instrumental take and Waiting On A Friend, here in its first version with Jagger
singing Waiting On My Friend. Separately is an instrumental take with Hopkins
and Taylor painting great landscapes, unfortunately these ideas have been left
unused, the track only been issued officially by Mick Taylor in 1999 only in
Japan (credited to him and Keith Richards) as bonus track to the Japan version
of Stone Alone, his version recorded in 1997.
Windmill#1
also known as Wind Call, an instrumental
track featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, while the second take has an additional
slide guitar, Hide Your Love is the official version. Disc Two opens with 2
versions of Silver Train the first having no harmonica) replicated as Track 10
(which is 5 seconds shorter) , the second one with a different mix; one of the
best tracks is certainly the version of Dancing With Mr D that follows, from an
acetate, in excellent sound as well as the longer 100 Year Ago. Angie is the
official take and the last three songs are the soundtracks of the tv promos, in
mono but however in great quality..
In short
this collection presents Goat s Head Soup outtakes in excellent quality, some
are different alternate mixes or rough mixes, others are versions coming from
acetates often showing long versions; unfortunately there is the inclusion of
many (unjustified) official tracks and 2 songs are repeated (Fast Talking on
Disc One and Silver Train#2 on Disc Two); it must also be said that the
unofficial tracks are well known to collectors. It should be remarked that the
audio quality is superb and maybe a casual fan would wonder what has been wrong
with said album: Goat s Head Soup went three times platinum but it still isn t
considered au pair to Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main Street as a seminal
Stones release, these tracks prove the basic ingredients are there and we can recognize
them in many songs that show their power and charm although subjected to
different production treatment.
