REVIEW:

This release is certainly the best (and most unexpected) Stones release of the year; it came out around Easter and presented a newly found soundboard recording of the Stones Hamburg 1965 performance, it was at first thought it was a straight PA feed. Back in 65 they only put vocals through the PA, so the guitars and drums we hear are all coming through Mick s vocal microphone. Occasionally he leans toward an amp with his microphone though so we get glimpses of the stage sound in between the vocals. It is very interesting to hear but certainly not a perfect soundboard or anything. Since it is just very rare to hear anything from 65, let alone anything this clean, this was a big surprise and kudos to Red Tongue Records for having dug this out of its resting place. They did a great job restoring the audio considering the original source, you can t make microphones appear if they were not originally present. In fact we get one after the other the treated version at first with each song separated from the rest and then the original material (and the difference is audible) with all songs in a single track.
The fun part of the recording is to realize that all of the band s and crowd s sound is basically what Jagger heard for the show. The microphone was a cardioid microphone used specifically for announcements, preaching etc.which was an unidirectional microphone picking up just very few ambient noises.. These were the pre-PA days! The crowd was indeed that loud, the band sounded great onstage. There was no band PA system, just their stage volume. Somebody had notice Jagger s being quite drunk on the occasion, other noticeable things are Jones screams (during Time Is On My Side) and The Last Time), Charlie Watts announcing the latter song. The second disc has the 1965 Olympia show from Paris that was released on many bootlegs, on vinyl on Gravestones and Rape of the Vaults ( RSVP 002-3), Andrew s Blues (Dragonfly IMP 1126 and Slipped Disc TT 979), Get Your Kicks (Mona-L6465), Fuckin and Suckin (TAP 010), Live in Paris 1964-Live in Sweden 64 2LP, Dix Heuf Cent Soixante Quatre (Mona Rec.), A L’Olympia 1967 (Magic Dwarf 4); Carol can be found on let it Rock! (VGP 2 LP) by Chuck Berry while Craw-dad on The Black Box (RSVP 1835), while on compact on   From Paris to Hollywood (SIRA 212), Still I m Gonna Miss You (VGP 073), Brian Jones All Those Years Ago (VGP 079), Paris Match (DAC 007), A Rolling Stones Gathers No Moss (VGP 101), Paris Match (Scorpio 15), L’Olympia (Pyramid 009), Raw Power (Blue Moon 41), Gods in Olympia (TMOQ 02/04), Rough, Dirty Irresistible (Document 012), Down the Road Apiece (Bad Wizard 6167), Our Last Concert Ever (Sister Morphine 57), Du Fond Du Coeur (FF1),   Live RS Paris 1965 (Bulldog 011), Live   in Paris 1965 (On Stage 2215), 66 Route (GFR 262), Olympia 65, Satisfaction & Beyond (GFR 484), Reelin and Rockin (VGP 274), From Honolulu to Down Under missing Everybody Needs Somebody To Love and On Stage (RS 3011). These songs are followed by two tracks recorded during the British 1965 tour when Got Live ep was recorded, coming from Charlie is my Darling s official release, some tracks from Ready Steady Go are found on vinyl on Crackin Up (Beeb SDE 75014) and Animal Duds (MR 85) and on compact on Radio & TV Sessions Anthology 1963-69(RS Box 1-4). Then we have the famous Poll Winners Concert already out on vinyl on Animal Duds (MR 85) and  Early RS vol.2 (Bulldog   LP 029), Pollwinners Concert 1964 & 1965 (Magic Dwarf MDR 2   on compact on Down The Road Apiece (Bad Wizard 6167), Early RS Live 64-67 (Bulldog CD 029), Got Live If You Want It! The final songs are 2 songs from Munster 1965 joined in a single track despite cover track listing, that came out as bonus tracks on Crossfire Hurricane release, too bad they didn t get another song (Around and Around) which was released only in Japan as bonus.

Disc Three has lots of tracks broadcasted on various shows, the 26th February Ready Steady Go songs came out incomplete on vinyl on Animal Duds (MR 85), Radio & TV Sessions Anthology (RS Box 1-4), Crackin Up (Beeb SDE 70514) and on compact on Crackin Up (Back Trax CD 4-88006); Shindig tracks came out on vinyl on Vintage Stones (BP 02), The Early RS Vol.2 (Bulldog LP 029),  on compact on Still I m Gonna Miss You (VGP 073) , The Early RS Live 1963-1967 (Bulldog CD 029), Radio & TV Sessions Anthology 1963-1967 (RS Box 1-4), while Play with Fire was originally released on vinyl on Gravestones and Rape of the Vaults 2LP (RSVP 002-3). Here Satisfaction suffers from bad production, having been cut and reassembled quite badly.

The Ed Sullivan tracks came out incomplete on Gravestones and Rape of the Vaults (RSVP 002-3) and Little Red Rooster on Growing Up Wrong (RSTV 6465),  A Slice of Swinging Pig vol.1 (TSP 001) also on compact like Conquer America (TSP 007) where they are found too on Bright Lights, Big City (Dandelion 099-100), Conquer America, (TSP 007) Cops and Robbers (WPOCCM 0289),   On Television 1964-1965 (Decca 6465), Radio & TV Sessions Anthology 1963-1967 (RS Box 1-4), Rollingmania (Black Panthers 04008) and of course these tracks came out officially in November 2011 on DVD.

On compact Bright Lights, Big City (Dandelion 99-100), Radio & TV Sessions Anthology 1963-1969 (RS box 1-4), Beast of Eden (Heartland Love)

As for the 22nd October songs they have appeared on Animal Duds (MR 85) and on Ready Steady Go (VGP 248)

This release presents very valuable stuff released for the first time and this alone should be sufficient to praise it, sound wise it is excellent except the last 3 tracks of Disc Three that suffer from tape s fluctuation and need to be speed corrected. As for packaging has nice photos, however the track listings on back cover and on the booklet is misleading, some songs that are mentioned having their own track are found on cd to be coupled with others, more care would have been needed here. Despite this minor problem it is certainly a worthy item for any collector to have.
