REVIEW: |
Here is
another technician s work which using the two available audience sources for
this concert has created a stereo output; the two sources for the matrix were Mannheim
On Ice and Eisstadion Mannheim, Germany 73; at first both sources have
been remastered, then the matrix was created and after that some more level
correction and equalization. Credits for this release are: Matrix by Falo, Remastered
by Captain Acid, Artwork by Mr. D. The difference with the previous known sound
outputs is evident when just in between songs comments come from one source, or
on parts of Midnight Rambler which comes complete from one source only where the
sound is dull and uninspiring. Instrumental in making 100 Years Ago sound live
as on the album is certainly Billy Preston, whose contribution to that era
Stones live sound is often neglected.
The first
appearance of a song from this show was in 1976 on 100& Odd Lots The Best
of the Rest a vinyl album (TMOQ- Odd One) and later cd (VHP 026) that had the
only live version of 100 Years Ago then available. Then this concert was
released first as Mannheim On Ice (OBR 458 CD 27) on a paper sleeve version
issued in 1996, then in 2005 Exile released it as Fire and Blimstone (sic) (EXM
008), followed 2 years later by Rag and Bone Buffet (Dasuje/NHK). Later came Eisstadion Mannheim, Germany
73 (DAC 072) version and then sporting the same title as OBR Mannheim On Ice
(SODD 060-61). Finally It Was 42 Years (actually Yeas on front cover) Ago
(Tarantura TCDRS 47 1.2) came out offering a slightly longer master tape, but
all these are mono. It must however be remarked that Bitch appeared in 1997 in stereo soundboard
on From The Vault (VGP 100).
The second
gig of the Stones 73 European Tour was in Mannheim and the band played a wide
variety of tracks from Goat s Head soup as they did in Vienna on the opening
night. The performance is not one of their best, they seem cautious in some approach
to the newest songs and some of the old ones aren’t played with confidence
(like Sweet Virginia). Steve Madaio and Trevor Lawrence help Bobby Keys on the
brass section; the band s introduction is on the first notes of Honky Tonk
Women, something the Stones did on this tour only.
