REVIEW: |
This release
continues the series from Mayflower presenting the sessions the Stones had in
1965 and 1966 even if there is one track from previous year (1964). On Disc One
we get the first I d Much Rather Be With The Boys without slide guitar at the
end followed by the demo for the Toggery Five, Satisfaction and The Spider And
The Fly backing tracks then we get Good Times II that the cover for mysterious
reasons attributes to 9-07-63 (9 July 63 that was the day Fortune Teller was
recorded while on 7 September 1963 there was no recording session) that has
added backing vocals at the end, amongst which there is Christine Ohlman, added
in the 70s followed by I ve Been Loving You (Too Long) without the added
audience from Got Live If You Want It LP and My Girl with no strings in stereo.
Then we are in Hollywood RCA Studios for the long December 65 session with two
takes of 19th Nervous Breakdown, the second one being the outfake
right channel one, Mother s Little Helper backing track at whose beginning we
can hear Andrew Oldham counting, Goin Home that clocks in at 11.28 thanks to
some studio talking at the beginning and Think with horns overdubbed at the end.
From the same studio but in March 1966 there are 3 more backing tracks Lady
Jane, Paint It Black and Out Of Time before two versions of Con le Mie Lacrime,
the first one lacking the harpsichord.
Disc Two
opens with Out Of Time demo for Chris Farlowe, then the long August 1966
session from RCA Studios with backing tracks (Yesterday s Papers, My
Obsessions, All Sold Out, Please Go Home, Complicated, Let s Spend The Night
Together, Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?) and finally
the Olympic Studio sessions featuring other backing tracks (Let s Spend The
Night Together with chorus) and Get Yourself Together II as well as odd tracks,
Trouble In Mind having a spoken intro with Brian Jones on kazoo. However there
are also a number of officially released songs that are no outtakes at all
(Ride On Baby, Sittin On A Fence, Out Of Time) and some tracks that see only
part of the band members involved like Stu Ball released as Stu and the Railroaders
in 1965 or All I Want Is My Baby that is Bobby Jameson version produced by
A.Oldham with Keith Richards as musical director for a single that came out on
27 November 1964 that has Jimmy Page on guitar and Andrew Oldham on backing
vocals; So Much In Love is the Mighty Avengers song produced by John Paul Jones
in August 64 while Each And Every Day Of The Year is Thee from May 1965 and the
last two songs are from Chris Farlowe from The Art of Chris Farlowe Immediate
album, produced by M.Jagger. This collection presents excellent takes though
especially the Between the Buttons backing tracks that are stereo versions with
no hiss at all and is a valuable example of a great compilation that can be
assembled covering old studio sessions including weird but interesting ones.
