REVIEW:

Mayflower is one of the few bootleg labels that has its own site (https://www.neofaust.com/product-list/65) where it presents its new releases and after the release of Aftermath Sessions on its newsletter claimed the demise of the label saying that most likely no new discs would appear; some months later however the Complete Chess Recordings came out and now in short distance from the other the Satanic Sessions and a renewed larger version of Beggars Banquet Sessions. Unfortunately, most of the information regarding the recording dates provided by the artwork are not reliable, but one thing is certain: the sound output of the releases is always excellent, no hiss at all and great stereo separation.

This release offers the sessions for the famous Stones psychedelic album Their Satanic Majesties Request with plenty instrumental takes. The album was recorded during sessions at the Olympic Studios that began in February and ended in late October 1967: the album featured Jagger on lead and backing vocals and percussions, Richards on lead, acoustic and rhythm guitars and backing vocals, Jones on rhythm guitars, mellotron, organ, piano, horns, mandolin, sitar, flute and percussions, Wyman on bass, percussions, organ and lead vocals on one song and Watts on drums and percussions. Other musicians helped as well: Stu, Nicky Hopkins, Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and John Paul Jones among them. Disc One starts with an instrumental version of She’s A Rainbow without strings nor chorus, could it be the early one aka Manhole Cover? There was an instrumental version heard on Crossfire Hurricane but there was a chorus, or is it possible that they erased it with some device? Next come the well known takes of Citadel (21,24,34 and piano overdub) and 2 versions of We Love You (take 4 and take 16 with intro and end from other takes). Sing This All Together (See What Happens) lasts over 15 minutes and is said to come from take 7 plus an intro from another one) while the first In Another Land is noted as rehearsal, but its first name was Acid In The Grass, they are both instrumentals without chorus despite the latter being said to be chorus retake 3. The Lantern is take 5 also known as Fly My Kite while On With The Show (takes 6,3,8,11) working title was Surprise Me. 5 Part Jam that was also called Pieces is followed by Soul Blues; Jam One comes in 5 takes (14,1,8,9,12) and Title 15 is the instrumental called Dream Pipe which is also known as She’s Doing Her Thing that came out on the Fully Finished Outtakes set and finally Majesties Honky Tonk that has nothing to do with the 1969 single but is an organ driven instrumental and is here in takes 15 and 17. Disc Two opens with 3 takes of 2000 Man which was previously known as I Want All People To Know followed by take 2 of Gomper and a bunch of takes of 2000 Light Years From Home; next is a guitar and organ jam whose intermezzo reminds She Smiled Sweetly and Blues #3. The final sessions for Satanic produces Cosmic Christmas and Gold Painted Finger Nails, the latter’s title shortened is here in 6 takes followed by 2 takes of Child Of The Moon. The Bell Sound Acetate which were originally intended for Allen Klein with then unreleased tracks (there were 2 one sided acetates also from 11 June with the whole album differently equalized); here we get 7 tracks with different instrumental versions of Satanic songs mostly backing tracks, 3 of them in this compilation: The Lantern, In Another Land and On With The Show. This disc ends with the Miscellaneous section that includes She’s A Rainbow III promo edit version, Sing This All Together and The Lantern both from the July sessions.
