REVIEW:

The Stones first concert in Holland happened on August 8th, 1964 at the Kurhaus Theatre and is normally referred as the first venture of the band outside the British islands, however it must be noted that the band played 3 number at Montreux, Swiss in April of the same year for a Ready Steady Go show broadcasted on April 20th, let alone the first US Tour which began on June 5th in San Bernardino. Anyway the subject of this grey market release (not properly a bootleg but a non authorized release that due to the 50 years passed is legally possible, is just the Kurhaus concert, or what is available from it. The lavish release is basically a hard cover book with 32 pages full of colour rare archive photographs of the event with comments by fans that attended the show; inside is housed an LP that has a copy of the broadcast by Veronica Radio which broadcasted from the REM Island (an off shore platform) professionally re-mastered with background liners and a DVD which has (very clear) footage in Netherlands language but with English subtitles. All in colour except for the actual Kurhaus stuff which is in black and white; it includes interviews with the Stones chauffeur (showing the actual car which he used for the Stones),  photographer and a couple of police officers of the time; plus the former club manager. The DVD content is the copy of a tv-show that was originally broadcasted on  24 September 2011 by NTR-VPRO called Andere Tijden (minus the presenter introduction) which also included footage of   the rehearsal, it first came out on 4 August 1994 on Dutch tv TROS on a show called 2 Vandaag; it also exists some balcony footage discovered in summer 2014 that circulates among collectors. Anyway a Bill Wyman interview is advertised as being included in the DVD but actually there is one on the LP ( non listed on LP cover-label); there is an interview made on stage during the mayhem with someone asking in English what happened to Jagger s microphone which was stolen (that part is subtitled in Dutch!), but it is not clear who is answering.

The audio recording is quite clear (great sounding version of Beautiful Delilah) but it is a pity that Jagger can only be heard on that song; to supplement the live tracks on Side Two some interviews have been included, one with Charlie Watts made again by Radio Veronica in 1965, here there is an excerpt from the 1973 Press Conference where some journalist asks the band members to remember what happened in 1964 and a Bill Wyman interview from 2003 where he is shown footage of the gig (which he seems to see for the very first time). It is also included in the package a full colour A2 poster reproduction of the original concert poster. This is a nice product that although not cheap is a nice memento of one of the Stones wildest gigs; as footnote it is said in the video that the Kurhaus management tried to book again the stones 40 years later, but the band did not accept.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
