REVIEW:

Here we get another version of the Stones 1972 Vancouver, this time however this is a must have since Empress Valley has found an astonishing source with all instruments upfront and none of the glitches that marred the previous versions of this show especially at the beginning of the concert. The weird title comes from Bob Dylan’s comment referred to the Stones 1972 North American tour. Funnily after Gimme Shelter there is someone in the crowd shouting Paint it black, you devils.

This concert’s recording came out on tape at first as Vancouver Ventilation, than on vinyl some songs were on 100% Odd Lots (TMOQ ODD ONE); on compact from Vancouver First Night (SODD 038-9 and Off Beat XXCD) which had a strange setlist that put Honky Tonk Women after Street Fighting Man as an encore and a brighter sound then on Vancouver 72 (Idol Mind 022-23) later that had more bottom and the correct tracklist. Some years later a new release for this important show came out on Stones Touring Party Vol.1 (DAC 079), then Torn & Frayed (Palladium) came out and this one seemed to be the same source but there has been no enhancement of the high frequencies, so we just get it as it has been recorded, too much bass upfront on the verge of distortion, probably due to the taper position but a better enjoyable recording than previous releases, more lively. The complete show can be found also on Vancouver Ventilator (AM Productions). Another source for Vancouver show came out came from JEMS presenting some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives; some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. It came out on Ventilator Blues (Voodoo Jungle Rec. 035), then it was released as Touring Party Opener (Exile Rec. 107201) 3 cdr and Vancouver 3rd June 1972 (D&D Vol.3): an excellent recording but a little heavy on the bass. Then SODD re-released it as Stones Touring Party Chronicles Vol.1 (SODD 118-121) 4 cds featuring Vancouver and both Seattle shows, presenting great recordings from the opening riffs of Brown Sugar through the end; this version comes from the same source. In 2015 was released Here Come The Rolling Stones (Eat A Peach 12-14) and some years later with the same title but adding Vol.2,3 (Beelzebub BSD 214-17). The whole concert is also on American Tour 1972 (WLR 2119) 10 cds & 2 DVDs box. We get to this release that presents a real stereo audience recording of Vancouver, marking the first time for this concert to be released in such clarity, a real improvement. Some years ago came out American Exile (A.Ex 1972 1-3) that had less bass than the JEMS source and has also the whole in between songs comments and lots of tune ups that have not been edited out, therefore presenting an audio document of the first 1972 show as complete as possible. You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Rip This Joint, Ventilator Blues, Happy, All Down The Line and Sweet Virginia live for the first time, for a large audience also Loving Cup and Bye Bye Johnny, but Honky Tonk Women starts with wrong verse, impressive is the quality of Loving Cup and Torn & Frayed. Torn & Frayed is on 20 Years Rare Live 1969-1989 (Godfather Rec.002), 2 songs can be found on The Real Alternate Exile Album (Red Tongue 014) 6LP & 4 cd, 3 tracks from this concert can be found on Very Ancient, Thank Tou Kindly (Scorpio 30) and on 100% Odd Lots (VGP 026), Gonna Bust Another Bottle (Sister Morphine 35), 1972 American Tour (Teague Raw) 2cdr;   4 on Philadelphia Specialties Plus (APCD 057) and Touring Party 1972 Vol.1,2 &3 (Rattlesnake 048-54) 7 cds box.

This release presents a nice upgrade and it is for sure a welcome package, especially for those that still believe that tour the greatest one the band ever did. Packaging is excellent too with a Keith Richards mini poster and photos from the even on front and back cover, while the center shows shots taken outside the venue where major riots happened because too may people didn’t manage to find tickets for the opening concert of the tour.
