REVIEW: |
This release
from DAC present the complete recordings of both Hamburg 1973 shows, something
that was attempted by Tarantura with its Hamburger Concert release, but failed
since the second concert second part did originate from Bern.
The first
concert of the Stones 1973 stop in Hamburg is the same source as on the no-label
release Hamburg 1973 1st Show from 2013; recording of this concert came
out on tape as Give Me A Hamburger but the tape ran too fast, then as Hamburg
73 1st and Hamburg 73 Tapes, Ernst Merck Halle and finally on a professional
cdr called Hamburg 1973 1st show in 2013 for the first time (Hamburg
1973), later on a cdr called Afternoon in Hamburg. The first show here is in
good shape, a bit better than on the Tarantura set, not so distorted sounds at
the beginning, Jagger s vocals are fine and Taylor lead guitar is upfront on
some numbers (Angie, You Can’t Always Get What You Want), however it seems to
have been improved or coming from a less generation since it is not that
distant as it was on Hamburg 1st.
The second
show presented here is the same as on The German Affair (Pignose); recording from
this concert were more widely available, at first on vinyl with 3 tracks on The
Stars in the Sky Never Lie (Caution 197/810-11), 2 songs appeared on Jean
Clarke Memorial Sonic Barbecue (TAKRL 1919), 2 songs on Sonic Barbecue
(B.Island 25717), 3 songs on A German Affair (TMOQ-92), 2 on Tour Over Germany
1973 (TSP 300-36), 1 song is on Radio Caroline (27444 A/B).
On compact
it came out on cdr on Satisfaction, Hamburg 73 Tapes, which offered both shows
and then on Hamburg
73 Oct. 2, 2nd show. On silver discs then The Stars in the Sky Never
Lie (VGP-ASTS 19781) in 2005 presented the full concert although three songs
were cut and one not complete.2 songs can be found on The Jean Clarke Memorial
Sonic Barbecue (VGP 246) and on
The
Stars in the Sky Never Lie (Midnight Beat 141), 1 song on Reflection of a Stone
Alone (VGP 043) and 2 on The Stars in the Sky They Never Lie (DAC 100); 2 songs
are found on Best of Europe 73
(Hot Lips
003 3505). In 2003 came out The German Affair (PGN 046) that had a complete
recording with the same source as Stars in the Sky (VGP-Asts 19781) but offering
a lower generation and in 2010 3 tracks were featured on 1973 Tour (WLR 2135)
13 cd and 1 DVD box.
Last year
then Tarantura issued Hamburger Concerto (TCDRS 49) double discs with both
concerts, until it was discovered that the last concert second half was the
same as Bern starting with Midnight Rambler. The recording here starts with
Brown Sugar in good sound and the sound output slightly improves and is better
than the 1st concert recording, it must be noted that at tape
change, from Midnight Rambler onward, the sound output gets much better, however
having finally the Hamburg 73 show complete together can certainly be regarded
as a nice improvement. Packaging presents a rather standard front cover ad
nothing particularly enthralling elsewhere.
