REVIEW: |
The
Mayflower label, one of the few labels that still continues producing silver
discs, has recently ventured into another revisiting job starting with the
Stones live 60s recordings. Here we have the year 1965 documented with 2
different shows, L’Olympia in Paris and Masshalle in Gothenburg on a strangely
titled disc called Whirlwind of Life. The first recording is the French radio broadcast
which is one of the best early Rolling Stones live material available, its
importance proven by the sheer amount of releases and re-releases of these
tapes, Vinyl Gang alone released this material four times: Still I’m Gonna Miss
Tou (VGP 073), All Those Years Ago (VGP 079),
Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss (VGP-101) and
Reelin And Rockin (VGP 274), Dog And Cat two: Paris Match (DAC 007) and Get
Your Kicks (DAC 185), not to forget IMP From Paris to Hamburg (IMP N 051),
Goldplate L’Olympia Live in the Sixties (GP 1302 CD), Godfather Rec. 66 Route
(G.R.262) and Olympia 65 Satisfaction & Beyond (G.R.484),Sister Morphine: …Our
Last Concert Ever (Morph 57) and WLR The Real Alternate Album Studio Works
1961-65 (RTR 006) as well as countless others; it is sufficient to state that
the early releases of these tapes were fair sounding at best while later
releases have had an improvement with copies made from rebroadcasts from the
radio. As a matter of fact, French radio Europe 1 recorded and broadcasted four
of the concerts in Paris from 1965 to 1967(too bad the first show from 20
October 1964 is missing). The tapes have been rebroadcasted several times over
the years and have been released on a number of bootlegs. The April 18th, 1965
was the last of three shows played there that year, unfortunately both the 16th
and 17th April recordings are not available; the set list has the
Stones emphasizing cover tunes. Sound quality for this tape is excellent,
balanced and complete. It is very consistent in quality without some of the
breaks between songs and the final track, Bo Diddley s Craw-Dad which was
renamed Hey Crawdaddy on many bootlegs due to the Stones making this song their
signature tune while at Richmond s Crawdaddy club which is OK here. Everybody
Needs Somebody is the opening song followed by Around & Around and then the
band delivers a very fun and enthusiastic set. It’s All Over Now has the crowd
singing along and Little Red Rooster contains great slide guitar by Brian
Jones. On I’m Alright Mick has the audience in a frenzy! It interesting to hear
the Stones in mid- sixties radio friendly pop-blues form, playing a lot of
bouncy, happy, snappy tunes. The second radio broadcast on this release comes actually
from 2 weeks before in Sweden and was just released previously on Play With Fire
(VGP 286) 2 songs only and Scandinavian Shakedown (VGP 365) complete; this is a
real audience recording obviously worse in quality with lots of screams but still
listenable.
